Never let it be said that the new president of the Hartford Club, Peter Schwartz '60, hasn't a real classical bent to his party planning. This was evidenced recently as the Insurance City opened its new season with a most unique Freshman Reception held in the evening (not the usual luncheon) in the elegant Avery Court of Sculpture in the newly renovated Wadsworth Atheneum. Over one hundred alumni, wives, under graduates, and freshmen attended. This turnout was especially remarkable in view of the difficulties which Hartford was experiencing with a city-wide curfew in force at the time.
Mr. Schwartz had the honor of welcoming our first female Dartmouth "man" in the person of Miss Martha Fransson, Tuck '70, while Pete Palin '61 reported that his treasury was about to add another $1250 to our ever growing scholarship fund. A large word of thanks for a finely run event goes to Dave Wallace, Tuck '6B, who made the cocktails, buffet, and fellowship more enjoyable by his fine organization.
Soon afterward a stout band of Third Century Fund workers met at the Hartford Hilton with Dean Carroll Brewster and National Alumni Chairman, Larry Marx '35 for an excellent program of talks, questions, and answers to some tough problems that will face many solicitors as they soon present themselves to you (if not already), and ask your help in this crucial capital gifts campaign. Hartford has a rather healthy monetary goal, and you are asked to very, very seriously consider sharing your wealth with what has to be one of the best bets on which to place your money today. If you have already committed, think again - could you perhaps benefit your College and your community just a bit more? Don't feel shy about coming forth!
Our first monthly luncheon on October 8 brought us the new basketball coach, George Blaney, who replaced Providence bound Dave Gavitt '5B. That visit of course gave us some early scuttlebut into the up coming hoop season, which hopefully will continue its upward swing. Meantime, football is the name of the game, and we regret that difficulties beyond our control forced the club to abandon previously made plans to reactivate the pre-Yale Smoker. We'll try again next year!
BUT - all is not lost, for we do have an outstanding event upcoming soon, on Dec. 5 to be exact. That event is to be the presentation of an all new concept in Glee Club concerts by the new, electrified, amplified, and visualized singing ambassadors as they present to us for the very first time in this area the special Bicentennial Concert. If you think you've seen glee club shows before, then throw away your old ideas about what it's all about, for this is NEW. Mark it and meet us there!
And finally, here's hoping that this reading will find Hartford's TCF chairman, BillGraulty '46 out of the hospital and well on his way to complete recovery from a serious back operation.
Gene Howard '49 and Bob Gurley '44(r) joined two Cornellians to win the Chicago Ivy League golf foursome tourney.
