I didn't make it up and you probably won't believe it, but there are exactly 44 sons of '44 currently on campus (there would be 45, but John Shapleigh's son, Jack '71, is on leave for a semester). This counts down to 9 seniors, 14 juniors, 9 sophomores and 12 freshman, and it led to a group of '44 locals organizing a small "do" for those at hand. We rented the Tom Dent cabin down on the Connecticut and put in a supply of hamburgers, beer, cider, pumpkin pie and ice cream and gathered in front of a crackling fire. Many of the group had other commitments (jobs, rehearsals, practice, etc.), but 19 of them and four of us were on hand. Dave Eckels, Wemo Epply, DonCampbell, and Fritz Hier made up the older generation and they hosted the following:
Bob Lovewell '70 (John Lovewell); John Morse '70 (Harry Morse); Don Weir Jr. '70 (Don Weir); Mac Barrett '71 (Allen Barrett); Mike Feldman '71 (Rog Feldman); Tod Pickard '71 (Al Pickard); Chris Ross '71 (Gordie Ross); John Sholl '71 (Dick Sholl); Bill Trier Jr. '71 (Bill Trier); Larry Bickford '72 (Burt Bickford); Paul Douglas '72 (Tom Douglas); Kip Hale '72 (Ezz Hale); Hal Anthony "73 (Gil Anthony); Roy Davis '73 (Dick Davis); Jay Densmore '73 (Ja Densmore); Marc Eckels '73 (Dave Eckels); Freddie Rankin III '73 (Fred Rankin); Rick Saul '73 (Art Saul); and Wils Wilson '73 (Wils Wilson).
Those Densmores keep jumping into the typewriter. Dartmouth has launched preparations for hosting the 1970 NCAA Ski Meet Championships and who else but Ja, who does bricks in nearby Lebanon, has been named director for the meet. He was assistant coach of Dartmouth's ski team from 1945-53 under Walter Prager and coached the Indian varsity in 1948 while Prager was with the U.S. Olympic team. His son, mentioned above, is as much of a schusser as his father and all he did last year while at Lebanon high school was to win the Skimeister title at the nationwide junior championships in Alaska.
In the world of high finance Harry Colwell keeps climbing higher; witness his August promotion to vice president at the Chase Manhattan Bank, N.A. Harry joined the bank's credit department in 1947 and was named secretary of the general loan committee in 1951. A year later he was transferred to the United States Department, and in 1955 was appointed assistant treasurer. He neared "orbit" in 1959 when he was promoted to second vice president of the aerospace division of the department, a post he held until his being named vice president. Harry, with wife Olive and three children, lives in Pelham Manor, N. Y.
Among those contributing tangible evidence that the flesh as well as the spirit are still young are Walt Olin and SteveTate. You will remember that Walt couldn't make it from Colorado for the 25th because Barbara was expecting; well, a daughter, Cara Ann was born October 4. And the Tates, Joey and Steve, parented a second son in October. Hats off to late comers. ...
From these happy notes to the other, sad side of the ledger. Bill Turpin's wife, Adriana deHeus Turpin, died October 5 of cancer. Active in Washington real estate since she and Bill returned from a long list of overseas State Department assignments she leaves with Bill their three children Adriana 19, William Jr. 17 and Evelyn I know I speak for all in sending deepest sympathies.
You may have already seen that Dr. Horace S. Blood was named "Outstanding Citizen of 1969" by the Greater Concord, N. H. Chamber of Commerce at its annual meeting. His award cited outstanding community service in more than a half-dozen different fields, including YMCA, City Planning Board, United Fund, Rotary and for his competence as an ear, nose and throat specialist at Concord Hospital.
Also, up-up-and-away: Shel Spicer recently moved up from assistant trust officer of the Industrial Bank of Providence to assistant vice president and trust officer of the Bristol County Trust Co., Taunton. Mass. And John Bird, southern area general attorney for U.S. Steel Corporation has been named to head the corporation's Southern Area Office of the Law Department in Birmingham, effective October 1.
In Rochester, N. Y., Ezz Hale has been appointed director of institutional sales for the Lawyers Cooperative Publishing Company, an assignment carrying responsibility for LCP sales abroad and to U.S. government agencies and the armed forces. Ezz wasted no time getting overseas, witness a spate of postcards from him from such exotic spots as the Ginza section of Tokyo and from the heart of downtown Manila. Who can doubt but what those geisha girls are up all night reading law books! Ezz retains responsibility for LCP's law school program and continues as corporate secretary. He has been with the company since 1947 and was elected to the board of directors in 1955.
Dr. Bob Lindsay has forsaken Atlanta, Ga., where he was Regional Health Director for the U.S. Public Health Service, for a new assignment in Washington, D. C. he says: "My new position requires wearing two hats, in that I am associate director of the Indian Health Service and chief of the Office of Program Services. ... Since our family spent three years at a Presbyterian Mission Hospital on the Navajo Indian Reservation some years back, it is great being involved again in health programs aimed at improving the lot of some 400,000 Indian people."
Word from up Rochester, N. Y., way has it that that perennial sportsman and early morning jogger, Andy MacDowell caught a sneaker in his sweat clothes, fell and broke a knee-cap. There must be a moral there for us less ambitious, safe fellows who lie in bed an extra half-hour and merely think about reducing our waistlines.
Merle Hagen has reported in the Class Newsletter on some of those seen in Hanover for the Penn game. As a P.S. to that. Bud Pegler and his Nancy joined the group later in the evening at Lake Morey. While Dartmouth and Penn were doing battle that Saturday afternoon, the Peglers were at a Proctor Academy parents weekend, watching their son score 14 of his team's 19 winning points.
And of the 50,000 or so who were in the Yale Bowl Nov. 1 when the Green rode high over the Elis, 42 to 21, I can report that the following is at least a partial list of those tailgating or watching or both and mostly with wives: Ted Colwell, Clark MacGregor, Chuck Glines, Tank Bruce, Chuck Rendigs, Swampy Marsh, Ted Munro, Warren Leopold, Tom Miner, Hank Marshall, Ray Zrike, Phil Penberthy, Homer Bogart, Dick Mac Donald, Dick Mayberry, Merle Hagen, Wemo Epply, Jim Browning, Bill Fead, Don Lindell, John Engelhorn, Ralsey Scofield, Dave Brown, Jim Lang, Dud Wilson, Joe Dammann, John Morse, Charlie Spallino, Carl Eldridge, and yours truly.
