To avoid I-95 construction on their northerly trek from Port St. Lucie, Florida, to home base in Furlong, Pennsylvania, Janet and Paul Freud spent some time exploring the western North Carolina mountains while staying with Chris and Don Sheffield. Paul continues his career as a scientist working part time for Microtrac Inc.
Roli Kolman and Charlotte Coomer manage to spend a few months in Tucson, Arizona, each winter to avoid the rotten weather in Dublin, Ohio. He still banks royalties from his printed T-shirt business while working part time. Age and tired knees have curtailed his distance running somewhat, but he has logged 46,000-plus miles since he began keeping a daily record in 1968. Makes me tired just thinking about it!
If you can find your way to Big Canoe in the north Georgia mountains (not on any map I can find) be sure to look up Duncan Knapp. Better yet, play some golf and you are likely to find him ensuring the quality of the course. Dunc was given a “Seymour furlough” during our undergraduate years, so he joined the U.S. Army and came back to graduate in 1963.
For the past 36 years Hazel and Allan Greenberg have enjoyed living in southern Florida. Allan retired from his ophthalmology practice in 1998. While practicing at North Shore Medical Center he was elected chairman of the board, so at age 50 he went to the University of Miami and obtained an M.B.A. Traveling has played an important role in their lives. They have just returned from a 25-day cruise from Bangkok to Beijing. Allan sees a good bit of Joel Martin, his friend from their childhood in Brooklyn, New York.
Having fully adjusted years ago to the rarified air in Vail, Colorado, Al Danson spends his idle time skiing and snowshoeing in the winter and hiking and biking with Sylvia in the more temperate months. Along with Joe McHugh he serves on the board of the Gore Range Natural Science School. This foundation hires six new college graduate science majors each year and provides them with additional training toward graduate degrees in environmental education. Social events often find the Dansons joining Sissel and Dick Pomboy plus Cat and Gerry Huttrer. Monthly telephone chats with Bruce Ducker in Denver keep him in the urban loop. Al believes he spotted Urban Hirschey and Dick Foley skiing with their wives at Vail in early March. We’ll catch them next time.
