Another change of season is with us, and again greetings to all '45s, both male and female!!

Politics continue to intrigue '45s as two more men have entered the political wars. Bill Merrill has been a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Congressman from the Eighteenth Michigan District. To enter the race, Bill resigned as chief assistant U. S. Attorney in Detroit, a position to which he had been appointed in 1961 by Robert F. Kennedy, then Attorney-General. Bill has been responsible for the prosecution of major federal criminal cases involving income taxes, mail fraud and organized crime.

Ray Fontana, ever busy as Massachu- setts Gov. Volpe's military aide, and recently having his picture circulated by wirephoto as he and the governor inspected tornado damage, has been a candidate for the Republican nomination for the eighth district Governor's Councilor. Both these primary races are now in the past and it would be even more newsworthy to report success for both men. However, their public relations staffs must be ignoring this column - anyhow, men, best of luck from all your fellow '45s.

Louis Mills won the primary election in June to become the Republican candidate for Congress in the 27th District of New York State. Louis is an insurance man and has devoted 18 years to public service. He serves on the Hudson River Valley Commission Advisory Council to combat water pollution and promote conservation. A former mayor of Middletown, he is president of the Greater Middletown Industrial Development Fund, to bring new industry to the area and is first vice-chairman of the Orange County Republican Committee.

It's off to Latin America (but no hint as to any place more specific than that!!) for Dick Murray who has been so active in Tucson, Ariz., as previously reported in this column. Dick, who has been awarded a twoyear grant by the U. S. Information Agency to serve as a school director in one of the Binational Centers south of the border, has completed a twelve-week training course in Washington and will be accompanied by his family. Please send along more information, Dick!!

Thanks to his wife, Barbara, we are now up to date on Red Merrill, Lieutenant Colonel, USMC, who has been in Viet Nam since July 30 as division engineer, First Marine Division. Red had previously been commanding officer, Eighth Engineer Battalion, Camp Lejeune, where his commanding general was John Bouker '37. The Merrill family is keeping the home fires burning for Red at Carlsbad, Calif. Red and Barbara have one son, a freshman at Oregon State University, and two daughters in high school and grade school. Any comments you care to make from that troubled area, will be read with interest by the class, Red - best of luck!!

With the appointment of two new vice presidents from the Class of 1945, the International Paper Co. has realigned responsibilities within its marketing organization. Russ Chase as vice president of the fine paper division is now in charge of marketing the company's business, printing, publication, and converting papers. Bull Hinman as group vice president has the job of consolidating the sales of fine papers, industrial papers, and all papers sold to paper merchants. Both men served in the Air Force before joining International. And as a further coincidence, both did their graduate work in Hanover - Russ at Tuck and Bull at Thayer.

Here and there. .. . Occidental College president Dick Gilman was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Pomona College in June. . . . Harry Figgie added to his corporate titles when he was elected a director of the Western Union Telegraph Co. . . . Bill Berge is the chairman of the Denver School Board's Advisory Committee on Equality of Educational Opportunity. . . . Ted Douglas is active on the New York City Dartmouth interviewing committee. . . . JohnWashburn of the U. S. State Department legal advisor office spoke to Norwich University cadets in the spring on the subject of "Soviet Culture, Ideology and Diplomacy." . . . Cliff Jordan is now associate director of development at the College, and continues his work as a most successful Alumni Fund secretary. . . . John Osborn has been elected to the Dartmouth Alumni Council.

The Princeton weekend of October 7-8 will see the class officers assembled in Hanover for their fall meeting. Any '45s in the area should contact Cliff Jordan or NickSandoe to learn what arrangements have been made for the informal reunion . . . see you there!!
