Dartmouth has received a capital grant of $100,000, payable in equal installments of $20,000 each over the next five years, from the Gulf Oil Foundation. The initial contribution, assigned to the College's Third Century Fund, was presented to President Dickey by Dr. Alex Lewis Jr., senior vice president and chairman of Gulfs education committee.
This gift raises the total of Gulf grants to the College since 1947 to $177,622. The grant is part of a Gulf educational assistance program that this year will distribute more than $3 million to students and institutions of higher education. The capital-grant phase of Gulf's program assists institution in meeting anticipated growth requirements, replacing obsolete buildings and equipment, and expanding services.
The College's Third Century Fund campaign for $51 million in capital funds is more than two-thirds of the way toward its goal.
