The Trustees have decided to suspend the previously announced plans to expand Thayer Dining Hall. According to College Business Manager Richard W. Olmsted '32, the Trustees reached this decision after studying enrollment figures of students in Hanover for the past winter and spring terms. Many students were away from the campus participating in foreign study and Tucker Foundation programs.
Construction of the new $2-million addition was originally to begin this fall. It would have reduced the ratio of students to seats from three-to-one to two-to-one. Half of the cost of the building was to come from the Third Century Fund, while the source of the remaining $1 million had not been determined. Mr. Olmsted said that undertaking the expansion at this time would probably result in increased board rates for students. He noted, however, that some existing facilities in Thayer will be renovated to make the dining hall more pleasant. And he emphasized that the expansion project was suspended rather than rejected.
