The Dartmouth Trustees at their meeting last month authorized increases in tuition, room, and board charges effective next September. Tuition for the academic year will be increased by $150, the average room rent by $30 annually, and the board rate by $20 annually. The new tuition fee of $2,350 covers health services and other fees often billed separately at other colleges.
The College announced that the higher charges will also apply to students in the three associated schools and to students in graduate programs in the arts and sciences.
The increases were approved by the Board of Trustees following continuing study of the impact of rising costs and the budget requirements of the College. The Trustees also provided additional scholarships for those students who otherwise would not be able to finance the increased costs. This is in accord with the Board's expressed intention over the years that it would "continue to be the policy of the College to select students without regard for their financial resources" and to develop a financial aid program of commensurate size, so that no student requiring financial assistance would be adversely affected by necessary rate increases.
The increase will bring Dartmouth's overall charges for 1969-70 to an average of $3,475, an amount within the range of announced charges at those private institutions with which the College is traditionally associated.
The Dartmouth summer term fees will also be increased from $150 to $180 per course for tuition and from $285 to $315 for room and board.
The College announcement said that the Trustees "have kept this year's increase in charges at a minimal level to meet immediate necessities taking into account continuing rising costs throughout the institution."
