THE seventh Dartmouth Summer Term will begin on Monday, June 30. and end with final examinations on Sunday, August 24. This year 68 courses will be offered in 21 departments — an increase of two courses over 1968.
New offerings include Chemistry 3-4 (Introductory), which permits a student to accomplish in eight weeks what normally takes an entire year in colleges operating on the semester plan. In these concentrated courses the pace is swift and the learning intense. Six years' experience with Chemistry 51-52 (Organic) has provided evidence of the advantages of studying this kind of subject undiverted by other subjects, or student activities. In the sciences, Physics 3-4 (General) will also be given under the concentrated plan, while Geology 1 and Mathematics 3 (Calculus), 6 (Finite), and 16 (Computer for Everyman), will be single courses offered in eight weeks. Mathematics 16 is a computer course for non-mathematicians and was one of the early experiments of the Dartmouth Summer Term, and led to inclusion of a similar course in the curriculum during the year.
In the social sciences an effort has been made to provide courses with greater direct relevance to the contemporary world, by offering pairs of courses concerned with closely related topics. Examples are Government 81 (Men, Society and Violence) and History 80 (Social Change and Revolution); and History 39 (Making of Modern Africa) and 86 (Negro in America). For the first time History 34 (Rise of the U.S. as World Military Power) will be offered in the summer, as will Psychology 10 (Human Personality), and Religion 2 (Asian).
There will be two new courses in Geography, Geography 10 (Population Geography), and Geography 71 (Geography of New England).
As the list below indicates, the Congregation of the Arts will again have strong offerings in studio art, drama and music. For the first time, Philosophy 45 (Philosophy of Art) will also be available.
Intensive language courses in German, French, Italian and Spanish have become fixtures in the summer program. The methodology used in these courses was developed at Dartmouth during several years of experimentation in training Peace Corps volunteers to learn a new language in a minimum of time.
The number of conferences and institutes for continuing education will be fewer this year. Included will be the ABC Program, Graduate School of Credit and Financial Management, Management Objectives Program for executives of the Bell System, the Alumni College, Thayer School seminars on Reverse Osmosis and Information Theory, Northwestern University School of Law's National Institute for Education in Law and Poverty, Human Space Perception Conference, and the Pharmaceutical Executive Conference.
