A calendar of the future events of interest to 1911 would contain these references. First comes the Bicentennial Celebration, June 16 to 18, 1929. You will have received an invitation from Jack Bowler and Dave Orr to participate in this event. Eight classmates have already signed up for this. During the three-day period of June 25 to 27, 1969, several hardy 1911ers and their wives will be guests at the Mountain View House. It is hard to break a custom that has been going on since Frank's first invitation in 1916.
Our last regularly scheduled reunion in Hanover will be the 60th, in June 1971. That will be the 200th anniversary of Dartmouth's first commencement. Special plans to commemorate the occasion are being made though no formal announcement has yet been released. No attempt will be made to predict attendance at this time but there are many optimists in the class who are already talking about it.
In the death of Howard Dunham, Dartmouth and the class of 1911 have lost a stalwart member whose great love was Dartmouth College. He was a popular and energetic member of the college faculty for 42 years and a great devotee of Dartmouth sports. His passing leaves us without an editor of the class newsletter which he published even at the risk of his own health.
When Wee Kimball was class agent and then editor of "Leven Up" he became much interested in having the College make wider use of "The Bulletin" which carries news of great interest to a large number of "working" alumni, to amplify the class newsletters. Wee is a prodigious worker, as you know and he works for what he thinks is best for the College, which is more frequent and explanatory news of events taking place in Hanover. His plan is now being widely discussed.
The two heavy snowstorms that interrupted all traffic in Hanover and surroundings drove some natives to Florida and kept others from starting. Bendy and EuniceGriswold planned to start the morning of the first storm, but could not make it and will now stay in Saco. It was good news to find old friends at the Bellevue Biltmore, the Jack Russells and the Jack Steeves. Hazel is much improved in health. The Steeves were on their way to the Florida Country Club, presided over by John Dodge, and thence to Ireland where they will be in June. Hardly a week goes by during his 80th birthday year that does not find public acclaim for DonCheney and his devotion to the youth of Florida. Biff Thompson stopped in from Sanibel where he and Dorothy are enjoying themselves in spite of the lack of Florida sunshine. Biff reported finding Fred Long well recovered from his heart seizure but not enjoying looking out his front window at the now famous oil slick on the Santa Barbara beach.
The Sherwood Trasks have been surveying the attractions of Clearwater and St. Petersburg in comparison to Daytona Beach. John and Meg Pearson have not yet reported to Mt. Dora, as promised, due to the snowstorms and doctors' orders. The ClydeLockes have not yet shown for their annual lawn-bowling tournament. Otherwise matters in this area are quite normal. The Sandersons will shortly be leaving for Pittsfield, N. H., and the Burleighs expect to arrive in Hanover the last part of April.
It is always pleasing to hear from JohnSchaupp and you will be interested in a few sentences from his letter. "Time does pass quickly; I thought when I retired from the bench five years ago that a less active life would slow things down a bit. However, tomorrow seems to become yesterday more rapidly than ever. I had thought that with retirement we could go wherever we wished, on cruises and so forth, but this was not to be. We have had a lot of winter out here which I do not mind but Hazel is housebound until spring comes again. My own health is excellent for which I am deeply grateful."
