Samuel W. Smith '49, science teacher and soccer coach for 15 years in New Hampshire public and private schools, has been appointed an assistant director of admissions at the College. Since 1966 he has taught science and coached soccer at Derryfield School, a private day school in Manchester, N. H. He earlier had been a teacher-coach for eleven years at the Goffstown (N. H.) High School. He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

The addition to the admissions office of a third assistant director was authorized by the Board of Trustees in January in response to the recommendations of the Committee on Equal Opportunity calling for increased efforts by Dartmouth to recruit qualified students among disadvantaged young people, especially black students. As a Negro, Mr. Smith, who will also have responsibilities in the financial aid area, brings personal insight to the special problems of black youths.

At Dartmouth, where he majored in geology, Mr. Smith was very active in the Dartmouth Outing Club, serving as a member of the executive committee of the Winter Sports Board, president of Bait and Bullet, secretary and member of the executive board of Cabin and Trail, and a member of the Mountaineering Club.
