JUNE 1969 ROGER F. EVANS, H. BURTON LOWE

At 7:15 the morning of April 12, a cablegram brought Ollie and Marion Barr at Norwood first congratulations on their Golden Wedding anniversary, from GeorgeSmith in France. "Our two sons," wrote Ollie, "had an Open House party for us at the home of our son George in Walpole. About sixty attended and all seemed to have a real good time. We sure did and are most grateful to 'our kids' and their fine wives for their thoughtfulness." "Ollie and I grew up together in Norwood where we were team- mates on the high school baseball nine," wrote George. "But at Hanover the pace was too fast for us, so we took refuge in tennis. There, in the fall tournament we paired in doubles and did well enough until we met Jack Nelson '13 and Win Webber. Exit!" Jack and Win as we recall were respectively our varsity tennis captains of '13 and '14. Belated felicitations from all of us to the Barrs.

Spence and Kathrine Sully have sold their California house and from April 18 have an apartment at 223-P Avenida Majorca, Laguna Hills, Calif. 92653. Ralph Mendall in late winter also sold his house and with his son Trafton took an apartment at Nemasket and Spring Streets, RFD # 4, Box 396 C, Middleboro, Mass. 02346. It makes a doubly happy set-up because his oldest daughter Marguerite has taken the apartment just above and her son Kenny is shortly due home from Aeronautical College at Daytona, Fla. The move made, Ralph spent five weeks at Grand Island, Fla., with his daughters leanne and Nita, and one day drove over to DeLand and Ormond Beach to see the Russ Leavitts and Betty Wilson.Polly Shedd sold their home of 23 years and with son Don's good help moved into an apartment: C-3 White Columns, 480 South Milledge Avenue, also in Athens, Ga. 30601. In April Les Campbell reported their new apartment address as 8 Jay Ridge Apartments, Cobleskill, N. Y. 12043. After nearly eighteen months with her "California daughter," Susanne DaCosta returns in early June to her own home in Middleboro, Mass.

Here's a pleasant surprise: Louise Behnke says she met Ben and Edna Eastman at a Fort Worth filling station. "They looked wonderful and about June 1 are moving back to Fort Worth to have a small house on their 'farm' which is now a lovely part of Fort Worth." More to come. LucilleCole spent her fifth Christmas among the flowers and sunshine of Lima, Peru, with her second son and his family. ... Pinned down in Grand Rapids for six months while both sons, their wives, and three of the grandchildren were recovering from three separate car accidents, a fall, and an illness, Cliff and Jeanette Herold finally got off to northern Florida in early April. They eventually found warm sun and a delightful apartment near the great white beaches of Marco Island and planned to stay there till mid-May. ... Dick and Kay Parkhurst flew April 24 to Ireland for three weeks. ... The Butlers recently had the pleasure of a visit from young John when presentation of a paper at a New York meeting of mathematicians brought him on from Portland (Ore.) State College. Next school year he and his family will be at Ankara, where John has his second teaching assignment in Turkey in three years.

In a unilateral hoss trade John Stearns negotiated last autumn, he proposed that when he gets to a regional Class dinner or meeting, he will report it and those present in his BALMACAAN letter; and would leave it to this column to report on those who do not attend. I trust this is a standing arrangement for Fred Smith kindly sent us the following on those who hoped to attend the New York dinner on March 27 but didn't: "Dingwall flew in from California too late for dinner. Parkhurst had been down with me the previous week and had gone on to Washington. DeVoe had just returned to Florida. Wolff reported from Arizona that March was too cold in the East and sent greetings to his more hardy classmates. Pettengill was down with the flu." So was Evans.

These notes are being typed by a high window of the New Inn overlooking the campus, where Jim Colton, John Stearns and your secretary have gathered with hundreds of other Class Officers for the annual workshop meetings - serious, inspiring and enjoyable. But let me leave the detail to John's BALMACAAN. ... It is early morning. A single student is jogging cross-campus from east to west, for breakfast. The vista is softened by the first light greenery of the elms. ... At Worcester, before picking Jim up at Sutton, I found Hobey Marble, in windbreaker and jockey cap, working on his lawn. The night before, I shared a Boston dinner meeting and stayed over with ParkerHayden. He has been a prime mover in marshaling the sizable New England contingent of the American Proctological Society who, with hundreds from other regions, fly to London in June for a week of working meetings with their British colleagues, many of whom were over here a year or two back. Thereafter, Parker will fill out a month visiting with individual doctor friends around England.

Several classmates are planning to make their September reunion last a bit longer by traveling back to campus together: LouiseBehnke is planning to fly from Fort Worth to Boston, there to join up with Betty Wilson and the hospitable Kay English. JohnAmes is driving up with Phil Nordell. SallyGammons is going with us, as to our 50th. Others?

Since these are the last Class Notes to be printed before reunion, Jim Coffin hopes that you will all read the following attentively: "BALMACAAN'S 53rd Reunion, September 4-5-6, 1969, Hanover Inn. Write James McFate for room reservations, $14 double, $9 single, per night.
