By the time you read this class column our Fiftieth Reunion will have taken its place in the history of the Class. Your Secretary hopes that for those who were present it will have proven a grand and glorious occasion, and for those who, unfortunately, were not able to be there it will - be a means of drawing the Class — the Friendly Class — ever more closely together.
The Class extends its deep sympathy to Bob Bartlett's daughter, Mrs. Mary B. SWICK and the members of her family. Bob s obituary will be found in the In Memoriam section of this or a subsequent issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. Bob's health had been such as to prevent much activity for several years, and had prevented his traveling, except for occasional trips to visit his daughter in Connecticut.
A card to Rog Evans from Ken Stowell in Florence says that he and his family are enjoying their trip to Europe. Unfortunately they would not be back in time for Reunion. The Secretary's Record Book, as com- plete with biographical data as your Secretary was able to make it, was available at Reunion. Anyone who was not there and who wishes to get the latest biography of any Classmate can obtain this by writing the Secretary. . . . Congratulations to Mabel Tapley whose grandson, William Howard Vincent, is in the graduating class at Dartmouth. And to Bill, too.
Your Secretary has been remiss in reporting the marriage of Hobey Baker and Mrs. Ay a Sholley, which took place on June 1 of last year in Palm Beach, Fla. They are now living at 263 El Pueblo Way, Palm Beach 33480, and plan to be in Hanover m June. The Class felicitates the happy couple and welcomes the latest member to the Class.
Cards from some of my feathered friends who fly southward when the weather gets mean, and back to the north when the skies get sunny. We had expected Art and MarionMarsden to stop off with us, at least over night, but they phoned when they were already across the city and well on their way to New York. Ralph and Lossie Parker advised that the fishing and swimming were as nice as ever at Cocoa Beach. And Georgeand Betty Dock wrote from the Virgin Islands that they had spent ten days at Charlotte Amalie and on nearby St. Croix and St. John. "Beautiful hills and beaches, a few nice old towns with Danish touches, and a pleasant array of natives, grog and grub. Not much bird life, as imported mongooses have done their work, but we have seen a few Pearly-eyed Thrashers - spectacular brutes, with their austere gaze." And here George has drawn a circle with a bulls-eye. As you may know, George is an ornithologist of no mean stature. Earlier they had a fine trip to California and Mexico, which will be more fully described in a Newsletter.
Steve Harvey and his late brother, Bob, were the only twin brothers in the Class of 1916. They were born November 2, 1892. There are three other sets of brothers (not twins) in the Class - Charlie Brundage and the late Norman L. (Bub) Brundage, Les andRuss Leavitt and Spence and Wilby Sully.
Ed Craver's grandson, Chris Craver, is a freshman at Dartmouth. A while back he was at Ed's with the rest of his family thirteen in all at dinner. Chris' father, Perry, had attended the Fathers Weekend in Hanover, along with 400 other fathers. He slept in his son's room and had a high old time. Ed was commenting on the letters which the College sends to the fathers of freshmen Perry had received six - and on the consideration they expressed of all the difficulties of a young man starting out in college.
If you have not already sent your contribution to' the Alumni Fund it is not too late to do so. The Fund closes officially June 30. Burt Lowe and his co-workers need your help in reaching our goal of $25,000 a gift to the College which will be in keeping with our Fiftieth Anniversary. Many in the Class will be surprised to learn that since our graduation the Class has given almost $800,000 to the College — in round figures, $322,000 to the Alumni Fund, $10,000 for current use, $443,000 for endowment, $17,000 in bequests, and $2,000 for plant. Nineteen Sixteen stands 25th in the list of 75 classes.
