JUNE 1969 JACK DE GANGE

The Indians came up with a whomping 109-45 triumph over Springfield College in their final dual meet to give Ellie Noyes a fitting farewell as Dartmouth track coach. Noyes is stepping out of coaching to become administrative assistant in the Dartmouth athletic complex.

The victory over Springfield closed the Green's dual season with a 3-2 record. The other victories were over Brown 79-75 and a decision over Boston University 110-32.

As was the case during the winter season, the weightmen again highlighted the action. DeWitt Davies, the burly junior from Long Island who has been elected captain for 1969-70, closed the dual campaign by launching the hammer to a college record of 194 feet, 11¼ inches. That capped a steadily improving effort for Davies who has been close behind classmate George Remmer, another Long Islander, in the shot put. The pair have also been adding more points as key supporters for discus standout Frank Howard.

In the running events, junior Tom Miller turned in a fine 49.5-second winning time in the quarter mile against Springfield while Captain Mark Upton turned in consistent performances in the middle distances.

Looking quickly at freshman track, Eric Potter, the promising distance runner, trimmed three full seconds off the freshman two-mile record held by Tom Laris '62 as he was timed in 9:14.1 in the Harvard meet. Ted Moody, the burly shotputter, pushed his own record up to 49 feet, 10 inches.
