If the past two seasons have been rather disappointing to Hockey Coach Eddie Jeremiah, there is little doubt that this season will be even more so. Since last report when they had one win in three contests, Dartmouth has dropped five more games, including three Ivy League tilts. The Big Green lost to Middlebury, 2-0, Harvard, 6-2, Brown, 10-2, Boston University, 7-5, and to Princeton, 7-2.
Personnel losses have been somewhat responsible for this showing; because of sickness, accidents and other causes, nearly half the team were unable to play for one or more games. The scoring in the past five games has been sporadic, to say the least, and fairly evenly split among some eight players. Three sophomores - defenseman Clayt Freeman, and wings Dave Chapin and John Lannigan - have two goals each, while veterans Ron MacKenzie at center and Charlie Sprott at right wing have notched one apiece, as have reserve John Strong and sophomore center Dick Lenio and defenseman Don Thomas.
In an effort to eke out a win Coach Jeremiah has been shifting lineups and changing combinations almost every game. At times such changes have produced brilliant play, but defensive lapses and a seeming inability to score when opportunity presents itself have hampered the team in its comeback efforts. The chief difficulty seems to be that there are not enough experienced players with talent and that the talented sophomores (of whom there seems to be a pretty fair crop) have not yet developed.
The team now has a two-week layoff until the Winter Carnival games with Boston College and Harvard, after which eleven contest's including the annual Alumni Game remain on the schedule. Expect no miracles, but Jeremiah's teams always fight and more wins are in store before what is probably a below-par season ends.
