HALL OF FAME GOLFER
OCTOBER 1970

The New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame was officially inaugurated at Fredericton on June 27 with the induction of four of Canada’s great sportsmen. One of them was Val Streeter ’17, winner of 24 golfing championships over a span of 44 years and a highly respected influence on the development of the game in his home Province.

A golfer for 66 years (he began in Duxbury, Mass., at the age of 9) he still shoots in the 80’s and competes in senior tournaments. He settled in St. John, N. 8., in 1922, when he went to work for the Nashwaak Paper Cos., and in his first year as a member of the Riverside Country Club he won the club championship. That was the beginning of an amazing string of golf titles. From 1923 to 1953 he won the Riverside championship 12 times. He won the New Brunswick-Prince Edward Island amateur title in 1935, 1943, and 1944; the New Brunswick open championship in 1944; the Maritime amateur title in 1932 and 1938 (runner-up twice); and the Maritime senior title six times from 1946 to 1957. He was on the Canadian team that played the United States in the international senior matches in 1951, 1952 and 1955. As recently as 1967 he won the Canadian senior championship for players over 70.

Streeter’s home course in St. John is dear to his heart, and in order to improve it, and make it a little tougher, he has provided the funds to lengthen and rebuild the 6th and 13th holes. This will be a lasting contribution to New Brunswick golfers, just as his amateur sportsmanship and friendly influence have been over the years.

Two of Val Streeter’s sons followed him to Dartmouth. They are Jim Streeter ’56 and Dick Streeter ’57. There are two other sons and two daughters.
