That one point after touchdown was all-important as the Big Green, fresh from its victory over Lafayette, had much more trouble holding the Quakers in check in its first Ivy encounter.

Playing before some 10,000 fans in Hanover, the Indians, after an even start, managed to get rolling late in the first period to gain 83 yards in nine plays, and then 55 seconds into the second period Jake Crouthamel scored on a four-yard drive. Brian Hepburn's conversion kick was good and the Indians led 7-0. Penn, however, recovered quickly and after the kickoff took just twelve plays to go 59 yards for a score. But the conversion kick went awry and the score was 7-6. Halfback Jim Henander broke loose late in the second period for a 72-yard dash to the Penn 12-yard line, but the Quaker defenses held and the halftime score remained 7-6.

In the third period, after a Penn march to Dartmouth's 23-yard line was halted, the Big Green offense clicked again as penalties against Penn and a 54-yard march in ten plays resulted in another Dartmouth score. This time Gundy passed ten yards to Bill Hibbs for the TD. Another Gundy to Hibbs pass for the con- version failed.

Undaunted, Penn struck back and, sparked by a 50-yard end run by halfback Dave Coffin, went to the Dartmouth nine. Two plays later Coffin carried around end for the score. Penn gambled for the two points which would send them ahead, but a fumbled pitchout proved costly.

Both Dartmouth and Penn had further scoring chances in the wide-open fourth period but fumbles and pass interceptions on both sides halted any scoring threat. A last-minute Quaker pass into the Dartmouth end zone almost connected but Henander tipped it out of bounds at the very last second and the Indians had their hard-earned victory to start the Ivy League season off on the right foot.
