Two task forces to study the possibility of instituting a major program for continuing education have been appointed by President Kemeny. The two groups will explore different aspects of a proposed summer sabbatical program for business executives and professional people.
In his inaugural address and in talks to alumni across the country, Mr. Kemeny stressed the need for such a program in this era of rapid change and increasing concern with the quality of life. He is personally convinced that it "could make a major contribution not just to Dartmouth College but to the entire nation."
One task force will examine the possible academic content and character of this new kind of sabbatical. The second will weigh the financial requirements and feasibility of setting up such a program here. Dartmouth has had considerable experience in a more abbreviated and different kind of continuing education for alumni through its two-week Alumni College conducted on the campus each August for the past seven years.
James F. Cusick, Professor of Economics Emeritus and the first faculty director of Alumni College, heads the academic task force, while J. Michael McGean '49, Secretary of the College and the first administrative director of Alumni College, heads the feasibility study.
The two groups will meet together frequently and will ask representatives of business and the professions to meet with them.
