JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG NEGROES.
FEBRUARY 1970 RONALD N. TALLEY '69

By Adrian A. Paradis '34.New York: David McKay Company, Inc.,1969. 214 pp. $4.95.

In the midst of a time of much strife and tension, Mr. Paradis' book strikes a note of realistic optimism as it guides the young Black high school student through the complicated world of employment. The author's position is one of honest encouragement, in that he manages to point out the promising opportunities for young Blacks without trying to duck the truth of the present racial situation.

The student is given a brief introduction to the nature of many different occupations within various industries. Example cases are cited to instruct the reader in the several steps which are part of securing a desired job.

Especially good is the chapter on college education. In an age of such rapid technological advancement, one might have liked to see even more emphasis placed on this section. Throughout the book, Mr. Paradis re-emphasizes the importance of having the qualifications to get the job one seeks, and he points out the imminent frustrations facing the high school dropout. But for those who are interested in doing even better, he focuses on the importance and realistic opportunity of securing a college degree.

Finally, the exceptionally adequate listing of sources for further information at the end of each section makes the text highly useful.

Mr. Talley is a member of the DartmouthResearch and Counseling Office and a special counselor to black and disadvantagedstudents.
