There are times when I think that it is necessary to read the dear old "Daily D" to find out what is happening in Hanover. (I happened to note that it is now at Vol. CXXIX, whereas the "New York Times" is only at Vol. CXIX.) In any event, the second lead on February 26 carried the headline "Trustees Announce New Chairholders." Underneath was the name of Government Professor Frank Smallwood.
Frank has been named to the Orvil E. Dryfoos 1934 Memorial Professorship. (In case you've forgotten, Frank was managing editor of the "Daily D" and the late Mr. Dryfoos was publisher of The New York Times.) Frank is internationally recognized as an authority on metropolitan government and urbanization problems.
In addition to teaching and writing, Frank has his fingers in so many pies in Hanover that it is almost impossible to get to talk to him there - unless you catch up with him at a coffee break at some alumni function where he is on the program. He is Associate Dean of the Faculty, Chairman of the Social Sciences Division, Director of the Public Affairs Center, and Coordinator of Regional Affairs at the College.
Under a grant to the College, Frank is presently administering a major effort to inventory, mobilize, and coordinate important elements of the College's human and physical resources, from medicine to computer sciences, for activities in the surrounding Upper New England region. In addition, he is a trustee of the Vermont State Colleges and has been involved up to his eyeballs in Dartmouth's bicentennial activities.
Don Cox was recently elected president' and treasurer of Applied Geodata Systems, Inc., a year-old Cambridge, Mass., firm specializing in instruments and computer services for civil engineering use. He was formerly the company's marketing vice president. Don holds a Tuck School M.B.A. as well as his Dartmouth A.B. He joined A.G.S. in mid-1969 from his previous position of Industrial Sales Manager of Tracerlab division of LFE, Inc. Don, wife Carol, and their four children reside in Topsfield, Mass., where Don serves as a school committee member.
Late last year, the United States Senate confirmed Howie Glickstein's nomination as Staff Director of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission. (With Berl Bernhard as one of his predecessors, I am beginning to wonder whether Dartmouth '51's with 1954 Yale LL.B.'s have an inside track on the job. There are four more of us waiting in line when you move on, Howie.)
Howie served the Commission as General Counsel from August 1965 to September 1968, when he was named acting staff director. He has served as staff director-designate since June 1969, when he was nominated by President Nixon.
The Mechanics National Bank of Worcester, Mass., has promoted John Higley to vice-president and cashier. John joined Industrial City Bank of Worcester in 1960; served as a branch manager from 1960 to 1966, during which period Industrial merged into Mechanics; branch administration officer, 1966-1967; and became an assistant vice-president in 1967 with the title of cashier added in 1968. In April 1969, he was elected a director of Mechanics Bancorp, Inc., which I assume to be a bank holding company.
In addition to his Dartmouth A.8., John holds an M.B.A. from Boston University and is a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers. An incorporator of St. Vincent Hospital, he, wife Jane, and sons Peter and Timothy reside in Auburn, Mass.
Will Rowe has been appointed vice president and general manager of the Reheis Chemical Co. Division of Armour Pharmaceutical Co. Reheis is a leading manufacturer and marketer of specialized antacids and buffers, anti-perspirants, and biochemical products.
Will joined Armour Pharmaceutical in 1967 as controller. In addition to his Dartmouth A.8., Will holds an M.B.A. from Northeastern.
Late last year Ralph Watkins became senior vice president and national sales manager of Weis, Voisin, Cannon, Inc., a member firm of the New York Stock Exchange. Ralph is a former vice-president of E. F. Hutton & Co. He holds a Columbia M.A. in addition to his Dartmouth A.B. Ralph, wife Alexandra, and their four children live in Locust Valley, N. Y.
Frank Corbin is Section Manager, Peanuts and Prepared Mix Section, for Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati. He buys food raw materials. He and wife Lee have two children, Bill, 17, and Linda, 15. Frank is Vice Mayor of the Village of Terrace Park, Ohio, and producer for the Terrace Park Players.
Art Moulton may hold the class record for prolificness. He and wife Mary Ellen have seven children: Michael, 14; Kathleen, 13; Brian, 12; Dennis, 11; Ellen, 8; Kevin, 7; and Kelly, 5. Art sells for Woodward' Baldwin & Co., Inc. On the side, he is in the Marine Corps reserve and plays golf.
I always thought that there was an easier way to earn a living than practicing law. Dwight Allison, who made partner in the "shoe" Boston law firm of Goodwin, Proctor & Hoar, has proved it. Dwight and another ex-partner from the same firm named Bob Monks, who had the misfortune of attending Harvard College, are doing their thing with an outfit called Sprague Securities.
Their operation was the subject of a three-page article in the December issue of "The New Englander." Both left the practice of law to join Gardner Associates, Inc., a private investment and venture capital group. Then an opportunity presented itself in the form of C. H. Sprague & Son, Inc., an old company which had started out hauling coal to New England utilities. That company exported coal to Europe, and they put it together with Westmoreland Coal Co., headquartered in Philadelphia. They then went into oil. Before long Sprague Securities was a private holding company with assets in excess of $20 million.
They have now zeroed in on New England as such with three subsidiaries. Sprague Real Estate Trust has Atlantic coast oil terminals, commercial and industrial properties, and land for development. Sprague Medical Systems is engaged in leasing biomedical equipment. Atlantic World Port, Inc., is bidding to build the controversial new oil refinery at Machiasport, Me. I close on the note that Dwight and his family recently moved into a beautiful new home in Wellesley Hills, Mass.
