The freshman basketball team closed with eight straight wins and a 16-3 record and the man most responsible for the success was guard James Brown from New York City who finished with a 28.7-point average and scored 546 points. Brown broke every freshman scoring record and was far beyond the freshman scoring total of 353 points by Alex Winn in 1966-67. Forwards Bill Martin (15.1) and Robin Derry (12.9) followed Brown in the scoring.
In freshman hockey, the Little Indians also finished strong, winning their final eight games and posting an 18-3 record. Dave Sullivan, from West Newton, Mass., was the top scorer with 52 points, including 24 goals and 28 assists. He was the leader in goals scored and second only to Bill Berry in assists. Berry had 34 and a total of 48 points to join Sullivan as the pacesetters of six skaters who tallied at least 40 points.
Freestylers Steve Quigley and Craig Colberg were the leading performers for the frosh swimmers who closed with a 7-3 record. The frosh track team, led by shotputters Wayne Moody, John Leibert and Mike Shiaras, plus highjumper George Leach, soared to an 8-1 record, sweeping the field after an initial loss to Cornell.
The freshman squash team had a 2-7 record while the frosh wrestlers were 3-3-1. Ted Thompson and Wayne Gregg won the New England freshman wrestling championships in the 177 and unlimited classes, with Thompson winning with a pin in the final.
