A highly successful Dartmouth Day at the Races was organized by Al Huck '62 and held on a beautiful sunny day in February at Santa Anita. Some $150 was contributed through ticket sales to the Southern California Scholarship Fund, but the amount contributed to the horses was not revealed. Racing enthusiasts who turned out included Robert J. Cox '33, Ed Linsley '46, Bob Shirley '64, Bob Reid '28, Jerry Green-field '61, Pete Reich '53, and others with wives, kids, and guests. This may become an annual event.
We were fortunate to have as a special luncheon guest Football Coach Bob Blackman, who was in the area interviewing prospective Dartmouth students. The different location for the lunch, held at the Biltmore Hotel, brought out some new faces including Dan Garnett '64, Fred Fuld '40, George Grosshans '52, Wes Nutten '51, Allan Weeks '62, Ken Lieber '36, Bob Poet '46 who is just retiring as president of the Orange County Club, Dick Ranger '44, Leighton Tuck '38, and Bob Kerstein '37. Nick Carter '41 brought two guests from television, Mr. Ed Nelson of" "Peyton Place" fame and his son Greg.
The biggest event of the year, of course, has been the Glee Club concert which occurred on March 26. Co-Chairmen BobShirley '64 and H. Flint Ranney '56 arranged the many details involved in such an event, and were most appreciative of the assistance of some forty Alumni Sponsors, whose contributions underwrote the expense of the concert. Once that nut was cracked, the main job was in getting the auditorium filled. Occidental College's President Richard C. Gilman '45 was extremely helpful not only in offering staff assistance but in hosting a reception with his lovely wife after the concert. The Glee Club's performance was outstanding, making many loyal alumni feel that they were back at the college for a short visit.
At present we are looking forward to a visit to Los Angeles by Dartmouth's new president, Dr. John G. Kemeny, on April 21. We will have him as guest of honor at our annual dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel (managed expertly by Martin J. Rubin '40), where he will also have a chance to meet our wives. The dinner will also coincide with the nomination and election of new club officers for two-year terms. Reservations are suggested, and if you did not receive a mailing for this event, please call Secretary Ranney.
