Under the presidency of C. Eugene Givens '55, it has been an active year for the Dartmouth Club of Southern California. We have been fortunate to have interesting speakers arranged by Pete Reich '53 for each monthly luncheon, held regularly the last Friday of each month (except July and August) at the Wilshire Town Club, 2600 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles. Our turn-out has varied between 30 and 40 alumni of our local 1100 Dartmouth alumni.
During the current year we have heard from John Lyman '28 on money market pressures, Rupert C. Thompson '28 and Emil "Bus" Mosbacher '43 on the state of the Third Century Fund (Bus was subsequently appointed by President Nixon as Chief of Protocol, an honor not accorded to any other speaker as yet), Neil R. Bersch'53 on interest-free borrowing, Bill Myers'57 on the starting of Cable Commuter Airlines, Todd Thompson '70 on mountain climbing, Coach Bob Blackman with the 1968 football highlights, Charles "Cap" Palmer '23 on the geniuses he has worked with, Jack Rourke '40 and his race for Mayor of Los Angeles, and Vince Jones '52 with humorous notes on the Sears catalog. Vince has also been elected as our Alumni Councillor for our region. We have also enjoyed special events such as Dartmouth Night at Schlitz Brewery and Dartmouth Day at Santa Anita, which raised funds for our local Scholarship Fund.
The regular annual meeting was highlighted by a visit from retiring President John Sloan Dickey '29, and a dinner-dance at the famous Beverly Hills Hotel. It was here that Club Treasurer Robert Shirley III '64 agreed to serve out the second year of his two-year term in office. Other local alumni working with the College are Wesley L. Nutten III '51, who is area chairman for the Third Century Fund, and Milt Olander '51, always active in Enrollment.
Club Director Robert T. Cox '33 is organizing the first Dartmouth Alumni Seminar for this area, to be held September 5-7 at the Wawona Hotel near Yosemite to provide an intellectual and social weekend for all who attend.
