A new year began for the Dartmouth Club of Southern California with its sponsorship of the Second Annual California Alumni Seminar, held once again at the beautiful Wawona Hotel in Yosemite National Park in early September. Under the capable chairmanship of Robert T. Cox '33, a hundred alumni and wives joined with Dartmouth Professors Alan T. Gaylord and Charles T. Wood and some well-chosen discussion leaders to discuss whether or not we are in a revolution. It was a weekend which none of the participants will soon forget.
Club Vice President Robert T. Shirley HI '64 having followed the Owens-Illinois management trail to Rochester, (the directors duly met and unanimously elected) Thomas P. McCrea '53 as vice president of the Club along with luncheon speaker- provider Nick Carter '41.
Luncheon locations are variable, and for the latest information you will want to contact Secretary H. Flint Ranney '56 at (213) 626-4211 as to time and place. Under the aegis of President Edward B.Linsley '46 we met in September at the Jonathan Club to hear about the doings at Los Angeles Harbor from Public Relations Director Lee Zitko.
We celebrated our own Dartmouth Night on October 9 at the Schlitz Brewery in Van Nuys, which was only a few weeks ahead of the real Dartmouth Night, but was well-enough timed to stimulate the team to beat Princeton the next day, thus avenging last year's disaster. Randy Aires '57 was chairman of the event and had the capable assistance of Cap Palmer '23 in running the football film, fortunately!
Our regular October luncheon was held at the "new" Alexandria Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, where we met the Dartmouth Medical School team of Deans Philip O. Nice '44, James C. Strickler '50, and Peter F. Morrison who were in town for a convention.
In November we were privileged to hear from John Greenwood '51 about his work as president of Los Angeles Job Development Corps in making loans to disadvantaged minority businessmen. This luncheon at the very pleasant Yamato Restaurant in Century City was especially appreciated by Leon Rothschild '24 since he works right next door.
For December the regular lunch was changed to a cocktail party for Dartmouth students, parents, alumni, and wives on December 17, from 5-8 pm, at the Kirkeby Center Restaurant, in Westwood, through arrangements made by E. Russell Palmer '49. C. Alex Huck '62, while acting as treasurer, is also arranging another Dartmouth Day at Santa Anita for a beautiful day next spring.
