When you talk about Dartmouth track these days you talk about the weightmen. Oh, they're making progress in other corners as illustrated by the 7:49.6 clocking for the two-mile relay team at the IC4A meet in early March, a time that broke a 26-year-old Dartmouth record.
For the most part, though, it all revolves around four names - DeWitt Davies, Bill Dinneen, Ted Moody, and George Remmer.
Dinneen, a junior from Washington, D. C., startled everyone except his coaches by winning the Heptagonal title in the 35-pound weight throw with a Dartmouth record distance of 62 feet, 5 inches. Davies, who was second to Dinneen in the Heps at Cornell, went on to finish second in the IC4A meet and capped the winter effort by finishing third at the NCAA championships in Detroit and earning All-America recognition. Dinneen was fifth at Detroit.
Moody, the pre-meet pacesetter at the Heps with a Dartmouth record of 57 feet, 3 inches, took second at the Heps and was fifth at IC4A meet. The sophomore from Philadelphia, who has added 10 feet to his best throw as a freshman, missed the finals in the NCAA meet as did Remmer.
The consistency of the Green weightmen is shown in the fact that Dartmouth is the only college in the nation with three men who have put the 35pound ball beyond 60 feet. And Dinneen seems certain to pick up where Davies will leave off.
