MOST of the players who formed the backbone of Dartmouth's soccer team for the past three years have graduated, and Coach Tom Griffith will try and put together the pieces to duplicate (or, with luck, improve on) last year's tie for the runnerup spot in the Ivy League the best finish since 1954.

There are all sorts of holes to be filled as Griffith tries to replace old reliables like Bruce Bokor, Steve Papai, Frank Gallo, and Steve Alford. One position that is solid is the goal, where Lyman Missimer and Scott Blackmun are experienced sophomores. Another sophomore, Tim Ehrsam, was second to Bokor in scoring last fall and ranks with Bruce Hutchinson as the player to watch in the front lines. Midfielder Charlie Krupanszky and cocaptain Tee Hunt at fullback are the building blocks in the secondary.

Griffith borrowed a phrase from football - "Our defense should be ahead of the offense in the early stages," he said. "We've lost many key players in the front line. I think some of the freshmen coming will help. We're wide open for starting berths."

Elsewhere on the fall scene, junior Dean Stephens leads the cross-country team that was 4-1 and placed third in the Heptagonal Meet in 1975. A new look in women's sports unfolds this fall with tennis playing seven competitive matches and women's cross-country set for its first full schedule.

The changing scene: Gary Dicovitsky, basketball captain in 1972 and assistant coach at Dartmouth for the past three years, has been named head basketball coach at Loyola College in Baltimore, succeeding former Dartmouth coach Tom O'Connor, who moved up to director of athletics. Also in basketball, Alumni Gym has undergone a facelifting during the summer months. The renovation project involves installation of a permanent wooden floor that will accommodate two practice courts set perpendicular to the main court. Rollback seats have replaced the permanent seating that was installed when the basketball area of the gym was refurbished after indoor track moved to the new Leverone Field House.
