At the inauguration of classmate John G.Kemeny as thirteenth President of Dartmouth, Jack and Fran Dodd, Tony andEleanor Hanlon, Carter and Allie Hoyt, Ikeand Harriott Miller, Len and Margaret Morrissey represented '22. Jean Kemeny and children, Jennifer and Robert, were there, of course, and '22 delightedly acclaims them as The Class Family.
Class President and Boston Area Third Century Fund Chairman Wilbur W. Bullen is now also President of the Kimball Union Academy board of trustees. All good wishes, Bill, but, egad, '22 seems to be developing into a tribe of all Chiefs and no Indians.
And now, at long last, here are some gleanings from the other Coast:
Howie Almon, if all expectations have affirmed, is now back at his home in San Marino, Calif., and has fully recovered from his most regrettable accident. Just about a year ago while Howie and Valeria were in Spain he suffered a very severe fall causing compound fracture of one of his legs. As the slow healing progressed for almost a year, he has been at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G. R. Duncan in Oakland, Calif. All classmates will welcome this favorable report and none more so than Charlie Earle and Larry Healy, Howie's Tuck School roommates.
Buck Perry, advertising manager of our 1922 Aegis, is happily reported as healthy and too busy to count the years. His normal business center is Inglewood, Calif., where he has been in the wholesale egg and poultry business for over 40 years, and he is the owner of the Perry Egg Co. He spent this winter, however, in Weimar, Texas, managing his egg distributing plants there. His Happy Hen Ranches supplied eggs to supermarkets and other institutions in an area merely about the size of New England Come spring, Buck hopes to be back on the Coast doing the same in California, Oregon and Washington. And, not least with the gratitude of '22 he will be working loyally on the 1970 Alumni Fund. The best to you, Buck, in all respects.
Hal Frederick is another West Coast classmate of whom these notes have been far too neglectful. For the past 47 years, Hal has been in Spokane where he heads The Frederick Co., factory representatives and sales engineers of mechanical equipment. The news in Hal's case, however, is not the best. For over a year he has been under doctor's care due to eye trouble. All Twoter hope much better days are ahead for him. He cheerfully adds, "Say hello to all the boys for me. It has been many years since I have seen anybody from the good old Hanover area and hopefully I might get back around there in another year or so Maybe I should plan for the 50th." Please do, Hal.
Hopscotchirig Twoters during the winter included Haskell and Harriet Cohn — the Caribbean; Ted and Bab Davidson — South Pacific; Warren and Mary Daniell, Gene and Nettie Hotchkiss, Oscar and Bea Rice — all to the West Coast; Max and Grace Kenyon — Mexico; Brownie and Lois Brown, Carroll and Nan Dwight, Frank and Betty Horan, Ed and Kay McNamara, Walt and Doris Sands, Spen and Marge Smith, Ozzie and Luke Siegfried, Sutty and Harriet Suttmeier — and many others — Florida.
Dick and Mary Litchfield, en route to Arizona via Florida, lingered awhile to see Gunny and Irene Gunnison at Sarasota and to get together with Bill and Dot Gallagher. In Tucson Dick chatted with Shaw Livermore and with Frederic Sargent. All are in fine fettle.
Doc and Mary Hallett, Bob and GraceClark, Bill and Trudy Bullen, Fran and LucyLeland represented '22 at the annual dinner or the Boston Alumni Association.
Fran and Lucy can still rightfully claim "We was robbed." Joyfully returning to their North Andover home after the Yale game, the Lelands found that thieves had taken all their silver much of which was irreplaceable in age and family sentiment. Gosh, Fran and Lucy, please don't give up going to the games.
Andy Heath has undertaken another challenge in accepting editorship of a new quarterly magazine, "New Hampshire Echoes." We'll be looking for it, Andy.
Warren and Mary Daniell's son, Jere '55, associate professor of history, has been named chairman of Dartmouth's Committee on Equal Opportunity. In this post Jere succeeds John G. Kemeny, who prior to his appointment as President, was chairman of the committee consisting of students, faculty members and administration representatives. Jere has been a member of the CEO since its inception and among other courses he teaches one on black history and is also a member of the Committee on Black Studies.
Our loss of Ced Porter deeply saddens the Class. In Memoriam in this or a subsequent issue has a more detailed report.
Frances, wife of John C. Wood, writes, "Please thank the Class, for its very generous gift in memory of John to the Dartmouth Library. He was very proud of being a Dartmouth man and nothing would have pleased him more."
Dave Caldwell's brother, John E. of Henniker, N. H., also has expressed the gratitude of all members of the Caldwell family for the book commemorating Dave in Baker.
And now it's Maytime, but not too early to think about two entrancing opportunities: Have you ever thought of returning with some other classmates to Hanover for the Dartmouth Alumni College? This year it runs August 16 to 27.
'22 will have its usual congenial get-to-gether for the Princeton game weekend, October 9 to 13. The game itself is October 10. Ike Miller has reserved 12 rooms at Howard Johnson's White River Motel. Two rooms have already been taken. There is much more to say about the weekend later, but it is not too early now to let Ike know you want a reservation.
