Four-Dorm Experiment

Along with the announcement about Cutter Hall, the College disclosed another experiment combining residential arrangements with academic and social programs. Next fall the four Choate Road dormitories - Brown, Little, Cohen, and Bissell Halls - will become a semi-autonomous living unit. Two faculty members will live in the dormitory complex and funds will be provided to finance special academic, social, and cultural programs for the dorm residents.

The 280 residents of the Choate Road dorms will include the 75 women transfer students who will be studying at Dartmouth next year. Students now living in Cutter Hall and enrolling next term will have a special priority in room assignments elsewhere on campus, including the Choate Road complex.

The experiment is the result of discussions among the Deans of the College, faculty members, and the members of Foley House. The original proposal called for the incorporation of the facilities of Foley House (formerly Delta Upsilon) into the experiment, but the fraternity has decided to maintain its autonomy as a fraternity while offering its facilities to the Choate Road complex for some special events.

Programs contemplated include concerts, guest speakers, seminars, colloquiums, and possibly special credit courses conducted within the complex. The coeducational character of the whole program will be one of its strong points.
