"How did you like Double Play?" I asked my 14-year-old son, Brian, after I'd given him a couple of weeks to read it.

"It's simple, Dad," he responded. "If you like baseball, you'll love this book. If you don't like baseball, you'll hate the book." Brian likes skiing, hates baseball.

But as a veteran prep school shortstop, I like baseball so I took my turn at bat. Double Play recounts the experiences of a youngster coming out of high school and breaking into the major leagues as a pitcher. It is a good yarn, but perhaps overly sensational and even modernized with gamblers rung in (shades of Frank Merriwell). Some of the game accounts are by all odds the best parts of this tale.

In the final analysis Brian was right. All youngsters who enjoy baseball will enjoy Double Play. Maybe author Steve Lewinstein will turn to skiing his next time out!
