The Dartmouth football squad has shaped up just about as expected and once again has a fairly strong defensive unit and a rather weak offense. Team and individual statistics so far are unimpressive. The leading ground gainer for Dartmouth in the four games to date has been senior halfback Dick Collins who carried 39 times and gained 200 yards for a 5-yard per-carry average. Behind him is halfback Russ Smale who has gained 95 yards in 21 attempts, while Dick Calkins, another veteran halfback, has 71 yards in 28 tries. No fullback is anywhere near this figure and the lack of a good line-plunging full- back is being felt deeply. In the passing department the Big Green is below average. Veteran Jim Miller has completed 24 out of 53 so far for a total of 264 yards, while sophomore quarterback Ross Ellis has completed 10 out of 23 for a total gain of 134 yards.
Ellis, however, has turned in one of the best punting averages in the East, kicking 22 times for a total of 853 yards or an average of 39 yards per boot. Dave Mcaughlin is the leading pass receiver with 13 completions good for 146 yards, while Dave Thielscher, the other regular offence end, has eight receptions for 84 yards.
ven with four games under their belts, the ndians appear spotty. Injuries may be one actor in this. Mike Papantones, Dartmouth best linebacker and a fine offensive enter,is probably out for the season a badly injured knee. Tom Bloomer, one of the best guards, is also out of action with a broken thumb, while halfbacks Rog Warner and Hank Fry are both troubled with sprained ankles.
With the rest of the schedule against Ivy Group opponents Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell and Princeton the outlook is not bright. However, Coach Tuss McLaughry and his assistants are not completely pessimistic. With the veterans improving and some sophomores like Lou Turner, Joe Kagle, Dick Flagg and Bob Donohue beginning to shape up and get over their greenness, there is some hope for the games ahead.
But let's take a look at the four games the Big Green has played to date, starting with the most recent one the Dartmouth win over Rutgers and working back to the opener with Holy Cross.
