For the past two years, Dartmouth track captain DeWitt Davies has been on the brink of championship performances, but only in the outdoor United States Track & Field Federation meet a year ago did he win in his specialty, the hammer. During the recent indoor season, he was second to teammate Bill Dinneen in the Heptagonal weight throw. At the NCAA indoor meet, he finished third (good enough for All-America recognition).
At the outdoor Heps in New Haven on May 9, Davies broke the ice. He didn't surpass his Dartmouth record of 197 feet, 2½ inches, set the week before during a dual meet at Brown, but he did hurl the steel ball 193-10", more than four feet farther than Dinneen who was second. It set the stage for further improvement (Davies has thrown the hammer over 200 feet in practice) during the upcoming championship meets.
Another senior, Frank Howard, missed the Hep title in the discus by one inch as Penn's Ken Dietz's last throw carried on a wisp of wind to nip Howard's best effort of 171-3.
In the running events, senior Dandre DeSandies set a Dartmouth record of 55.4 seconds in winning the 440 hurdles at Brown and then took fifth place at the Heps. Distance runners Dennis Cullen, Mark Hamilton, and Eric Potter also have come up with improving performances as the Indians headed for their final dual meet at Springfield.
Track captain DeWitt Davies capped anoutstanding collegiate career by winningthe Heptagonal hammer title.
