Dartmouth sent the best one-two punch that the NCAA hammer competition has seen in many years to Des Moines, lowa, in mid-June and the tandem of Captain DeWitt Davies and Co- Captain-elect Bill Dinneen nearly came away with all the marbles.
Davies, winner of the Heptagonal and New England championship and runnerup in the IC4A meet, had to settle for second place again in the NCAA meet (he was fifth in 1969). The senior from East Patchoque, N.Y., had hurled the hammer 203' 7" earlier this season but trailed Oregon State's Steve DeAutremont in the NCAAs.
Dinneen, the top qualifier in the NCAA meet and runnerup to Davies in most of the spring competition, settled for fifth place but every indication is that he may be headed for still greater efforts in his senior year. Davies threw 195' 8" for second place and Dinneen produced a throw of 192' 1".
