Our next Class event is the fall reunion the weekend of the Penn game, October 810. Accommodations get sold months in advance but you are urged to visit '28 headquarters in the Ranger Room of the Norwich Inn Friday night and after the game. If you can stay for dinner, that's even better.

Let's give a big pat on the back to all of the Class and particularly Lew Beers and his class agents for the strong showing in the Alumni Fund this year. Our greatest strength was in securing 312 contributors, 12 more than last year, for a participation index of 81.5%. Our $37,868 total was not up to our nearby classes, but we'll beat them next year.

Our hard-working Head Agent, Lew, planned the campaign well but was in the Norwalk Hospital April 30 to July 3 for major surgery on May 4 and June 15.

Although Stew Hoagland has scooped us in the newsletter, we can't miss the opportunity to point with pride to the fact that John Turkevich received an honorary degree at the Dartmouth Commencement. You should read the citation in the July issue of the Alumni Magazine; one phrase sticks in our memory, his "boundless energy" in everything he did in his distinguished career of teaching Princeton freshmen and graduate students, chemical research, and working toward international understanding.

Bill Ballard served as Marshall of the Commencement exercises, and was honored by the graduating class by being invited to address them at Class Day exercises. He urged the graduates to have one more hard look at the Orozco murals ... "It is the commencement oration for our time. Get the strength of it and keep it always." Bill retired in June—if you missed it, read the account of his outstanding career in the June Alumni Magazine.

Lane Dwinell retired July 1 after two years as Assistant Administrator of the Agency for International Development and he and Betty have moved back to their home in Lebanon, N. H. They vacationed in Sarasota, Florida, in August-Don Solis saw Lane's picture in his morning paper (the interviewer had heard that Lane was under consideration to head President Nixon's re-election bid in the New Hampshire primary) and immediately called him, but the Dwinells were leaving that morning for New Hampshire.

Jerry and Doris Goodwin sent a card from York, England, in the middle of a 22-day trip through Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. Their European trips have become annual affairs.

Gene Andres and Helen plan to attend the Dartmouth Western Seminar to be held near Napa, Calif., on Liberalism. He was half-way through the books sent as required reading, "Greening of America," Ibsen's plays, etc.

For many years I have enjoyed sending each classmate a card on his birthday, always striving to find a satiric or humorous card appropriate for our age. This year there was a well organized "plot" and—you guessed it—the tables were turned. On September 4 (it's no secret any more), and the few days before, I was swamped with cards, presents and a telegram—over 200 and still coming. I am very deeply touched by the sentiments expressed and by all the time and effort expended. I want to thank each and every one of you—it has been a wonderful 65th! I'll find out at the Norwich reunion, but I suspect that the instigator of this heart-warming experience was Stew Hoagland.

Space won't permit using all the news received, but I do want to mention cards from widows of four classmates—VeraFlanigan Littlewood, Jean Leach Hord,Gladys Milton and Helen Mullen. The early planning of the conspiracy is evident from the fact that four cards came from abroad: Tavey Taylor's and CreightonHart's from London, Joe Chay's from Taiwan, and Roy Myers' from Czechoslovakia. Tavey and Louise are on their way around the world via Switzerland, Austria, Athens, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Japan and Los Angeles. Roy was touring Russia, Poland and East Germany—will be back in September to resume teaching at Newark State in Union, N. J.
