Every day Reunion Chairman Cal Billings and I receive cards and letters telling of the writer's intention of attending our 40th reunion June 17-19 in Hanover. June is only four months away, so get busy and write or phone friends whom you would particularly like to see in Hanover.
Latest to say they're coming are Jack Heston, Bill Hobson, Red Jenkins, Ed Heyn, Tavey Taylor from San Francisco, Dave Willard and Al Fusonie from Florida, Harry Jewett and children, Herm Schnepel and daughters, George Davis, Rupe Thompson, Hod Carver from Wichita, Lew Beers, Jack Phelan, John Phillips, and three from Washington — George Bell, Vic Hartjens and Si Warner.
The trustees of Canaan College have elected Curly Prosser president of that liberal arts college — 20 miles east of Dartmouth. We have several '28ers serving as trustees - Rupe Thompson (Dartmouth), George Davis (Skidmore), but Curly is our first president. He has a lot of problems, the biggest of which is to get some money to start their building program next fall.
Phil MacKown has just moved into a new bungalow in Korat, Thailand, and says, "Hope to make some small contribution to the effort going on over here."
Earl McGrath has been appointed director of the new Higher Education Center at Temple University. He is a former U. S. Commissioner of Education and now professor of higher education at Columbia University. He will begin his duties at Temple July 1.
"I got bored doing nothing last winter, so last fall accepted an invitation to teach a course in life insurance at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton," writes CharlieGearhart. Charlie retired in April 1966 after 36 years with New York Life and spent the next 16 months traveling all over the United States. He bought an apartment in Boca, joining Ernie Wright as a permanent resident, and reports seeing George Bougliton at his Colony Hotel in Delray Beach. Charlie and Henrietta plan on attending the 40th.
Newest addition to the retired list is Chuck Bennet whose address is now 5519 Cribari Circle, San Jose, Calif.
Jack Zanger, a district manager for Mother Bell in South Jersey, says, "Retirement looms for me and I am not sure I like it. Just returned from Florida - played 12 rounds of golf in three weeks, so I can't be in such bad shape." His oldest boy graduated from Ursinus, the second from the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy and the youngest is at Albright.
Bill Kimball's daughter, Mary Margaret, and Richard L. Wolfgang, a professor of chemistry at the University of Colorado, were married December 30 in South Lyndeborough, N. H. ... Alec Kerr's son, Douglas, who is graduating from Thayer School in June, was married last June to Catherine Babers in Wayland, Mass.
Henry Gere reports that son David is in the Air Force in Okinawa for 18 months, Bill is with Humble Oil in Houston, and Christine is in Jackson College, Medford, Mass., and married to Larry Gordon, an K..P.I. graduate.
Merrill Hodsdon, who retired from N. Y. Telephone Co. in Feb. 1966, is now established in Hollywood, Florida. After six months he got caught up on gardening and reading and took a part time job in a hardware store.
Tavey Taylor maintains law offices in San Francisco and San Rafael, where he lives His law practice is chiefly personal injury defense work. His two sons, John and Keith, are studying architecture at California State Polytechnic College at San Luis Obispo. Tavey sees Al Lathrop from time to time. Recently, while in Washington visiting his sister and her husband, Dave Martin '29, he and Louise had dinner with Herm Schneebeli '30 and Hal Leich '29.
Bruce Lewis has taken the lead in the grandchild derby - he now has eleven, Sam Magavern and Al Willey have ten and Jack Heston nine. Bruce tried to find Craw Pollock in Minneapolis in October and learned he had moved to Florida. Bruce moved his Lewis Historical Publishing Company from New York City to West Palm Beach seven years ago and continues to be happy about the move.
Post cards from Gordon Adams, Benton Harbor, Mich., and from Harold Fields, East Lansing, Mich., each also signed by Roy Myers, indicates that Roy is checking up on his '28 friends as he tours the country giving his famous lecture, "The Romance of Words." If your school or service club is looking for a good program, we can recommend Roy.
Sherm Baketel wrote from New Castle, N. H., in December, "This has been a rough year for me. Helen died last February of cancer after a long and difficult time and my readjustment to going it alone was pretty painful. I spent the summer as a volunteer helper at our colonial village reproduction in Portsmouth - 'Strawbery Banke.' In the fall I visited the Greek Islands, Istanbul, Athens, Majorca, the Canaries and Lisbon, with a side trip to Switzerland."
Mary and I and our two younger sons spent the holidays visiting friends in Periera, Colombia, with visits also to Barranquilla, Cartagena, Medillin and Bogota.
