Sime and Gertrude Gordon had two happy events this summer. Their grandson Ben 'Romney "D 1969" married Barbara Raybuin in July. Then their daughter Mrs. Ruth Cohen married Murray Koblenzer in August. Sime, may they be as happy as you and Gertrude, for we note you two have been married for 51 years.
Herm Whitmore writes he keeps close to home due to arthritis and a bouncing ticker. That's what he gets for being such an Adonis in his youth. Murray Baldwin, returning from Faric and the lost islands of the Indian Ocean, saw one of his grandchildren in London and then left for Arizona, wondering about the other ten grandchildren.
Mel and Frieda Southwiek have returned to Sewanee. Tenn., after nine months with various members of the family. Hugh Foss must be for "Coed" for he writes. "God bless the ladies but keep them off the gridiron." Guess he feels as sappy as your scribe when he watches the female cheer leaders. The Class of 1918 should bring back Chief Walking Stick and Chief Bertram Bluesky who introduced the Indian yell for the first time. What gorgeous costumes, their native right, they wore!! And who will ever forget the chill of their war cry! They were quite noble fellows, wanting to be accepted on their own personal merit. Wish they were here to guide the youth of today.
Neil Sheldon writes Stump Barr that, if you don't have a million, Vermont is the place in which to retire. He should know, coming from that lovely rustic town of Rupert, Vt. Then, Homer Bennett trusts Stump is hitting them long and straight. Homer, do you refer to golf or Bacchus?
Question to Lang Robinson, "How can you be at a meeting in the scrubby Poconos of Pennsylvania in September with our Vermont and New Hampshire at the best?" Phil and Lyla Tusting are looking ahead to our next reunion. Hell, what are they now doing? From one of the Saratogas, SigJudd, from 1:15 to 2:30, with international barristers, drank health to all in 1918. He did not report if it was P.M. or A.M.; he just ended his message with, "Hold it! And poor old Markey!"
Al and Mary Strout this fall sailed via the Canary Islands, Morocco, Spain and Portugal. Cliff and Adeline Daniels spent the summer with their daughter in Minnesota and are now back in Florida, working on the annual 1918 March Pow Wow. Charles and Bernice Jones are in a new home at Bradenton, Fla. after many years at St. Augustine. No address known. EdGarvey is busy watching Triple A Baseball at the new Albuquerque Stadium in New Mexico.
Amos Blandin is getting more out of life than ever and merits it. The judge swears the children and grandchildren are doing a better job of living than we of our vintage. Amen. He and Zeke Ball met on the roads of South Wells, Me. this summer. MaxOlney had a summer in Quebec Province casting for square tail trout. One threw him for a hernia operation. Must have been a steel head imported from Seattle!
On August 1, a family of 12 gathered to celebrate Bill Mudgett's 76th birthday, some even coming from as far as Switzerland—and youth of today seem to scorn past traditions! Congratulations, Bill, your folk appreciate the true essence of life. Your scribe misses it so much in today's news, he must applaud you and yours.
Tom and Priscilla Shirley had the joy of a visit from their daughter Betty and three girls from California. Then Dick andMarion White were to visit them in September. Doc McBride still has trouble adjusting to the New Mexico daily change of temperature which runs from 40 degrees to 92. He did not say if it was plus or minus. Anyway, he was kept normal by having his Maryland daughter and family daring to visit him despite what the weatherman reported.
The Sargents left their Vermont summer home after banishing several nudist bathers from their private swim area. Since it was both a male and a female who wanted the joy of a Vermont stream, to get back to what we all want, namely pure nature, who complained the most, Dwight or his Peg? Gee, they are forthright folks, and when they call the shots, one knows they have the right answers. Wish more people of our vintage had their courage to so call a halt to those who tresspass on one's property and the social mores of life. Maybe that is what our young children of today need—parents and grandparents who demand standards of conduct. So congratulations, Dwight and Peg! They could not leave the Hanover area without seeking out Ed Booth at his nearby Norwich home. They found him just returned from that most charming, upspoiled Maine coastal town of Castine. What a place that is to just relax and to eat tinker mackeral for breakfast, dinner, and a New England supper (In that area dinner was at noon. My folks never knew what lunch meant, except as a snack between meals), that is, if such fish are running in the harbor as they did the last time this scribe was there. That place is a real haven, and maybe the Heaven we all seek.
