North Country Aid
MARCH 1971

Beginning with the Class of 1975, entering in September, the College will earmark funds for financial aid to students from the northern sections of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, to assure that its opportunities will be within the reach of the most needy students of the region. Any student from this area who is admitted to Dartmouth will get financial aid in accordance with his need up to the full costs of tuition, books, room, and board.

While many students have been admitted over the years from these New England states, and many of them have been awarded substantial financial assistance, relatively few students from the northern and more rural sections of these states have applied for admission. By assuring the availability of financial aid funds it is hoped that no secondaryschool student in this area who aspires to enroll at Dartmouth will be discouraged from applying for admission.

With this step, the College implements the third stage of its program for providing more opportunities for disadvantaged students as recommended by the Committee on Equal Opportunity three years ago. Recognizing that not everything could be achieved at once, the College set the goals in three phases: an increased black enrollment beginning with the Class of 1973; with Bureau of Indians Affairs cooperation, provision of scholarship monies for 15 Indian Americans each year beginning with the Class of 1974; and finally, this pledge of financial aid funds for students in the North Country.
