A fund honoring the memory of Robert C. Gebhardt '57, member of Dartmouth's NCAA championship ski team in 1958, has been established by his family and friends to honor and aid the Dartmouth ski team.
The fund will make possible an annual trophy award, beginning this year, to the sophomore, junior, or senior ski team member who demonstrates "outstanding sportsmanship, loyalty to Dartmouth and the team, and hard work—both in skiing and academics." The award winner will be determined by the coaches and team members.
The fund may also provide occasional financial aid to enable Dartmouth skiers to participate in regional or national competitive events, or to enable the ski team to participate in competitive events not budgeted by the College.
Bob Gebhardt climaxed his brilliant skiing record by winning the NCAA slalom event and placing second in the Alpine combined when Dartmouth won the national title in 1958. After graduation, he established the Robert C. Gebhardt Construction Co. and became a specialist in the winter sports field. He built ski lifts and other facilities at Squaw Valley, and did similar work for Ski Incline, Alpine Meadows, and Boreal Ridge. He also engaged successfully in mountain road building. He lost his life in a motor boat accident near his home on Lake Tahoe, California, in September 1968.
