Robert C. Hill '42, United States Ambassador to Spain, who is shown with Generalissimo Franco when he presented his credentials in June 1969, has been named "Man of the Year" for 1970 by Guidepost, the American weekly in Spain. The signing of the Agreement of Friendship and Cooperation between the United States and Spain last August was one of the major accomplishments of his ambassadorship. Bob Hill earlier was a highly successful and popular United States Ambassador to Mexico, from 1957 to 1961, and before that he was Ambassador to Costa Rica and then El Salvador. Before going to Mexico he was Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of State for Mutual Security Affairs (1955) and Assistant Secretary of State for Congressional Relation (1956). To take his present post, he resigned as chairman of the board of Hillwood Corporation and as president of the People's National Bank in his hometown of Littleton, N. H. A close friend of President Nixon, for whom he actively campaigned in 1966 and 1968, Bob Hill's name is ever-present in speculation about national and New Hampshire politics. Among the honorary degrees he holds is the LL.D. from Dartmouth, conferred by President Dickey in June 1960.
