John Chamberlin has taken up the gauntlet. He wrote me a letter which is too long to reproduce here so I am forwarding it to the newsletter editors and will only include the teaser:

"... the following message will be ... a series of reflections on my Dart Coil-related experiences since graduating ... So why write? Because I'm so turned off by the drivel that's appeared so far (however this too may be drivel; that's up to the reader (s)) both in this column and in the other publication . . . But rather than simply cheap-shot your efforts in my correspondence with friends, I'll make an effort via this letter to generate some communication of, I hope, a slightly weightier nature (value judgment!) than who became ensign, mayor, M. A., etc. I recall dumping on such activities before I became one of 'them.' (I wonder if other folks, like me, still do not feel like 'them;' maybe it's a state of mind and of awareness rather than temporal or geographic factors). And all too quickly it seemed you/we were headed the same way."

John's concerns go way beyond "cheapshots," and are well worth your consideration—some particulars on the College's recruiting practices and potentials based on his experiences of the last year. Please do not go by this excerpt alone. It is intended simply to irritate/interest/encourage.

Let me make something of an impassioned plea for Kevin Cunningham, who is the class Head Agent as well as an instructor at the Jackson Hole, Wyo., Ski School. He has a difficult job, compounded by the wide range of attitudes toward Dartmouth which are represented in our class. Our reasons for giving or not giving may not be those of the larger body of alumni, and this column might be a good place to voice your opinions where they can be seen by a large segment of the community. My own conviction, particularly after reading the March "Bulletin" from President Kemeny which I recommend if you have not seen it, is that the need to perpetuate the institution under its new administration far outweighs any reservations I've had for past policies and operations, some of which continue. It would be nice if our percentage participation in this year's Alumni Fund were an accurate indication of how vital we judge the role of the College to be, or something like that, rather than just how well we responded to constant prodding.

A letter from Warren Barrash after eight months with the Peace Corps in Malaysia: "I am working with the Department of Aborigines in auto and truck mechanics. We're trying to teach the aborigines how to cope with the hustlebustle life of the industrialized world, and to function significantly in the military- industrial complex of Malaysia ... Perhaps most significant is my recent engagement to a Chinese medical staff nurse—no wedding date yet ... Distant plans call for settling down here in Malaysia and buying into a rubber estate ... Any Dartmouth friends in the area are welcome to drop in. Peace."

Rob Peterson's family writes that Rob was commissioned the day before graduation as an ensign, USNR, and left San Diego on a six-month tour in Southeast Asia aboard the "USS Rowan." The ship acted as support off the Vietnam coast. Rob served as first lieutenant, and is now on leave.

I have a newsclip which reports that Stan Graves is working for VISTA, and has been assigned to the Bennington- Rutland Opportunity Council office in Rutland, Vt., for at least one year. Stan will work in Proctor where one of his first jobs will be to assist residents in setting up a multi-purpose center that will serve various community activities. Stan and the other VISTA volunteers in the area live with low income families as part of their training program.

Three marriages to pass along. StephenMcKeown and Alice Kitchel (Wellesley- Dartmouth) were married December 29 in Passumpsic, Vt. Richard Scoville and Jim Buchman were ushers, and Jay Doyle and Steve Harvard attended the service. RoyDuckworth married Margaret Holmberg January 29 in Pelham Manor, N. Y. DixDruce served as best man. And LouYoung wed Mary Grimard (Mary Hitchcock '70) in South Deerfield, Mass. TomQuinn and wife Pat participated in the ceremony.

In case you missed him, that's JeffLocke dancing with the March Playmate in "Playboy" at Bones Gate. His "envious Dad" aiso mentions that Jeff was recently commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps and is stationed at Quantico Va.

Tom English sends the following news: Jim Sligar finished four months' active duty at Fort Dix and will enter Harvard Law School in the fall. Bill Shattuck was released from his ROTC-incurred active duty obligation and is back in Hanover working toward his engineering degree Harry Morgan and Joe Sehwartzman are living together in Hanover and attending the medical school. Roland C. K. Ng is at the University of Chicago Medical School John Caldwell and Bob Bull are med students at Michigan and Columbia respectively. At Penn Law School are Randy McFarlane, Jeff Simcox and Tom Walsh.

That's about it for the moment. The British postal strike seems to have silenced Gambacinni, although maybe he can still be heard on the East Coast. ... I just paid my mailbox rent and check religiously twice a day for your communiques—Any outrageous comments will be entertained, I'm running woefully short of them myself.
