The Dartmouth Medical School has initiated a program to recruit Indian Americans for the study of medicine with the long-term goal of helping to improve medical care on Indian reservations.
Establishment of the new program was made possible by a recent unanimous vote of the medical faculty to provide tutorial support and curricular flexibility for minority group students, in recognition of the special difficulties of promising students whose education would not normally qualify them for admission. Although the time requirement and course sequence may differ from the norm, these students will be required to meet all academic standards and requirements for a Dartmouth medical degree, according to Dean Chapman.
The first Indian American students to be enrolled in the medical program at Dartmouth are expected to begin their studies in September 1971. Negotitions are in progress to gain federal and private support for the program.
