OCTOBER 1972

Ralph N. Manuel '58 is the new Dean of Freshmen, succeeding the late Albert I. Dickerson '30, who died unexpectedly in May after more than 40 years as an administrative officer of the College.

Mr. Manuel, who was Assistant Director of Admissions from 1962 to 1968, returned to Hanover in 1971 as Associate Dean of Freshmen. He served two years as an academic adviser at the General Curriculum Center of the University of Illinois, where he received his Ph.D. in educational administration.

During his earlier service with the College, Mr. Manuel was a charter member of the Trustees' Committee on Equality. His responsibilities with the Admissions Office lay in the areas of student recruitment and liaison with various referral agencies such as Upward Bound and Yale Summer High School.

He earned his master's degree in counseling psychology at Boston University in 1967 and, as a doctoral candidate in Illinois, held internships at Roosevelt University, Parkland Junior College, and both the Chicago Circle and Champaign-Urbana campuses of the University of Illinois.

Mr. Manuel's undergraduate major was economics, and he attended the Tuck School during his senior year. He was commissioned by the Dartmouth ROTC unit and served four years with the United States Navy in London and with the Pacific Fleet.
