ALUMNI FUND
These pages record the details and achievements by alumni classes and other groups which combined to make Dartmouth s 58th annual Alumni Fund such an extraordinary performance. The final figures show a total for the 1972 Alumni Fund of $2,660,193 from 21,221 donors and an alumni participation percentage of 58%
There is a slight disappointment in the fact that we missed the full 1972 goal of $2,750,000 by some $90,000, but we raised almost $200,000 more for Dartmouth this past year than in 1971. Moreover, in the past two campaigns, which followed the successful completion of the College's major Third Century Fund Capital Campaign for $51-million, the Alumni Fund has forged ahead from the $2-million level, to produce increases totalling over $600,000 in two years.
There is little doubt that some attrition was caused by a relatively small number of donors who withheld or reduced their giving to the College because of disagreement over the Trustees decisions last November on coeducation and year-round operations. Our analyses reveal that some 2,491 men, who gave $138,000 to the 1971 Fund, failed to contribute this past Spring, and there were an additional 2,835 alumni who reduced their annual contribution.
More than offsetting this attrition were some 6,154 Dartmouth men who increased their 1972 gifts by $429,000, while another 2,302 alumni, who had not contributed in 1971, returned as donors to the 1972 Campaign with a total of $110,000.
A major factor in the success of the past two campaigns is the new Reunion Giving Program, whereby ali reunion classes seek substantially larger dollar goals in honor of the reunion occasion. The twelve Reunion classes, in the 1971 and 1972 Campaigns, have accounted for more than half of our total dollar increases, with three classes (1931, 1932 and 1942) raising more than $100,000 each under the program.
This report shows the records compiled this year by all classes and highlights the Green Derby winners, in some very close competition, as well as the top classes in several major categories. The Alumni Fund Committee joins me in saluting these top classes, while at the same time we record our appreciation to all classes for what each did to make this campaign such a success. We want to thank especially those who worked so thoughtfully and well as volunteers — the Head Class Agents, Regional Agents, Regular Agents, the Memorial Gift Agents, and the Special Gift Chairmen in the Reunion Classes. We had almost 4,000 alumni working with the Fund last Spring, and it was this task force which was mostly responsible for the fine results.
It has been a very real privilege and a great pleasure to have served as Alumni Fund Chairman for the past two years. I am deeply grateful to the members of the Fund Committee, who worked so closely with me on the plans, programs and responsibilities for the campaign. I also extend appreciation to our fine Hanover staff who provide the vital servicing and support to all volunteers. I wish my successor, Sandy McCulloch '50, full success as he takes over, and I am confident that the annual' Alumni Fund will continue its proud tradition of "keeping Dartmouth strong today, stronger tomorrow" under his energetic leadership.

How Fared Last Year's Reunion Classes?
Implicit in the Reunion Giving Program is the promise that reunion classes are not expected to repeat their special reunion gift in the year after reunion. However, that there is some carryover of reunion year enthusiasm is evident in the following table:
