So much of the success of Dartmouth soccer this fall depends on the rapid development of the sophomores. There is only one senior regular on Coach George Beim's team (Co-Captain Bob Jordan) and the brunt of the load, at the outset, was placed on the shoulders of Frank Gallo and Keith Mierez, the sophomores who combined for 33 points on last year's undefeated freshman team.

There was one snag as the season began: both Gallo and Mierez suffered leg injuries and the attack that was supposed to be much improved suddenly was missing its scoring punch.

It showed in the opener as the Green fell at Middlebury, 2-0, and things weren't much better the next week as Springfield dominated play and coasted to a 4-1 victory.

Then, with Gallo playing on little more than one solid leg, things began to shape up. Beim took his team to Amherst and, after 10 games without a win, Dartmouth scored a 2-1 decision. Pete Adler, another sophomore, notched one goal and Jordan got the deciding goal when he took Gallo's pass and converted with less than a minute to play.

Next came Williams, a team had tied for the past two years, and that's what happened again. After 100 minutes of regulation and overtime, there was no score.

"We can't lose if they don't score," said Beim, and that's what happened when Princeton came to Chase Field.

Gallo, who is better on one good leg than most players on two, got Dartmouth's goal early in the first half and it stood up for a 1-0 win.

While the attack has been mute, the defense has come to life. Led by Drew Remignanti and Jeff Badmington, the Green has been marking tightly and keeping much of the pressure off goalies Mark Porto and Rex Holsapple.
