The Club held its annual dinner at the Holiday Inn in Fishkill, N. Y., on January 21, 1972. After a hearty meal of roast beef and trimmings, the 32 members and wives present, including guests Alan Welty '27 and past President Mike Fletcher '55 (from the Westchester and Springfield Mass., Clubs, respectively) and spouses, settled back to listen with great interest to our guest speaker, Al Quirk '49, Deputy Director of Admissions. Al spoke on the Dartmouth Plan of year-round education and, of course, the admission of the ladies on a full undergraduate basis. His comments were most enlightening, particularly in conjunction with those of Jim Sullivan '73, who joined Al in the long trip from Hanover. Jim's less than enthusiastic feelings about the new look in Hanover contrasted with Al's quite respectfully, and both provided a more objective view of the issue thereby. (I say "issue" in spite of the fait accompli last November, because they'll be talking about this one for a long time to come!) Al and Jim fielded the expected questions rather well and, all in all, provided the Club with an evening both entertaining and informative—all the while fighting that electronic organ in the next room! Our thanks to both of them for a few hours well spent!
The next "coed" (there's that word, again) event will be in early June at the home of Bob Kendall '49. It will be a picnic for one and all, and any and all children are welcome. Any ideas for fun and games should be passed along to me, and I'll see that they get to the event Chairman (anybody see our Veep, Dave Petrie '60, anywhere?). More word on this later.
The scholarship Fund Study Committee is looking over several ideas and should have some alternative plans ready for the Club's consideration by the June Picnic, if not earlier. Any and all suggestions are still earnestly requested. Incidentally, the Executive Board is entertaining plans to incorporate the Club as an incentive for contributions to such a fund. More on this at the picnic (hope it doesn't rain!).
One final note—the monthly luncheons will be held from now on at the Holiday Inn on So. Road (Rte 9), Poughkeepsie. The time remains at 11:45 on the first Wednesday of every month from September to June. Hope to see you on April 5th.
"Men of Dartmouth" was sung at the close of the annual dinner (for the last time?) For one, I feel we need a more relevant Alma Mater. As an ex-member of the Glee Club, I'm partial to "Dartmouth Undying-" Any thoughts?
