APRIL 1972 RICHARD S. JACKSON, ROBB M. DEGRAFF

It is with regret that we record the death of Otis Lamson Jr. who was with us freshman year, before transferring to the University of Washington. We first received word from Bozo Noland who had this to say:... "I got to know Otis on the freshman trip to Moosilauke. He and ColinHolman also from Seattle, were close friends. We (Otis and I) had occasional contact through the years. The Nolands had seen the Lamsons when we went out to the Northwest, and the Lamsons had visited the Nolands when they came East. Carolyn, Otis's wife, called me Thursday to say that Otis had had an accident with a gun; that there had been surgery on January 20, but he expired on Saturday, January 22 ... Otis was a real fine fellow with a great family. He was an avid sailer and skier. Not too many years ago he designed and, with others, had built a boat for the Transpacific Race (West Coast to Hawaii) and sailed in that rugged competition ... He always had a warm spot in his heart for Dartmouth. The generation has lost a fine and noble guy."

Last month we detailed the upcoming end of a decade for Ev Woodman as he steps down from the presidency of Colby Junior College. This month, we have in our possession a copy of a letter that Woody dispatched to President Kemeny, congratulating our prexy on the good judgement shown by Dartmouth in crowning a Colby Miss, Marguerite Russell, as Queen of the Carnival. Woody points out that he had the good sense to marry a Colby girl, establishing a relationship with the two colleges that was to endure and mature with the years.

And talking about marriages, we received a N. Y. Times clipping through the good offices of Michael Ellis, the class theatrical entrepreneur, which recounts the wedding of David Smith to Miss Mary Hicks Edson on the appropriate day of St. Valentines, 1972. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Franklin Churchill Edson of New York and the late Mr. Edson, a former president and board chairman of American Asbestos Manufacturing Company of Hunt, Ind. Our old Phi Bete not only claims a degree from Dartmouth, but is listed as an alumnus of the Sorbonne and the Columbia Law School. He is currently a partner of Baker & McKenzie, a large New York law firm, and a dean of the Graduate School of International Affairs at Columbia. You will recall that Dave served as Assistant Secretary of the Air Force in the Eisenhower Administration, and still holds the rank of Colonel in the Air Force Reserve.

Herb Hirschland has been named senior vice-president of development with American Can Co., in NYC. This step was apparently taken before the turn of the year. Herb is living a rugged commuter hop away in Greenwich, Conn, after years of residency in New Jersey.

Danny Hull, long-time associate editor and editorial news director of the Water-bury (Conn.) Republican and the Water-bury American, and a more recent senior editorial writer for the Hartford Times, has been named new secretary of Martha's Vineyard Chamber of Commerce and the new county advertising agent. Sounds like an enviable kind of activity in a garden spot location.

Apparently the good ladies of Connecticut are not yet satiated with the depth of knowledge and winning ways of ArmandoChardiet. Armando, long on the rubber chicken circuit around south central Connecticut, appeared this past January as the featured speaker before the Women's Republican Club of Orange, Conn. Armando carries impeccable credentials having been the holder of a law faculty chair in criminal law at Villanova Catholic University in 1950, and assistant dean in 1955. After the overthrow of the Batista regime in 1959, Professor Chardiet served as a delegate from Cuba to the Legal Committee of the United Nations. But with subsequent disillusionment with the Castro government he resigned his diplomatic post in 1960, and has settled in and around New Haven, teaching history and government at Yale, and he currently is a professor of foreign languages and coordinator of the Latin American Studies Program at Southern Connecticut State College.

There was a wild competition on the paddle tennis courts at Wee Burn Country Club in Darien in late February which saw your correspondent teamed up in a member-guest tournament with our President Bert MacMannis. We were superb in the early outings but bowed out one and love in the quarter finals. It was only after the match that Bert clued us in that we'd been taken apart by one of the top national ranked combinations, who were about 20 years or so our juniors, and light years ahead in raw talent. So it goes!

Address changes coming up: Dr. Murray Bornstein street hops in Englewood, N. J. to 151 Hillside Ave., (zip 07631). John Bowie leaves the country, from Potomac, Md. to Office of the Political Advisor, Hdqr. U. S. European Command, APO New York, N. Y. 09128. Howie Snyder moved to 1901 Dayton Rd. #5, Chico, Calif. 95926. And finally, the big bald eagle with the beautiful wife, Larry Vulte, flew from Essex, Conn, to 45 North Sandy Hook Rd., Sarasota, Fla. 33581.

So much for April... see you in May.
