This is the season for alumni gatherings all over the country, and we are fortunate to have correspondents who have sent in prompt reports.
Cal Billings drove over to Boston from Hartford for the annual Boston Alumni dinner on April 4 at the Marriott Motor Inn and reports that Mutt Jennings was the only other '28er there. Mutt sat at the head table due to his new job as Boston Area student placement director. President Kemeny addressed the 450 alumni. Our Class Agent, George Emery, planned on attending but was unable to make it. George had lunch with Cal in Hartford on March 31 to go over Alumni Fund plans.
John Phillips and Jack Sellers attended the Alumni Fund dinner April 5 at the Hotel Commodore in New York, at which Mr. Kemeny spoke.
Jack Kenerson wrote from Honolulu to remind us that it's time for you to get in touch with the Norwich Inn to make reservations for our annual football game weekend reunion on October 14. The deadline for reservations is August 1. .Tack and Fran are due home April 7 from a round-the-world cruise on a Norwegian-American liner. Before they hit Honolulu they had arranged for Sue Beers Sherwood and her husband Mike to join them for dinner. It was a shocker, of course, to have her respond to Jack's question, "How's Lew?" with the statement that he died February 4.
Bill Ballard left Hanover February 11 for Bucharest, Roumania, on an Eastern European exchange program that the National Academy of Science runs with the Socialist countries. Elizabeth wasn't able to join him until late in March because she had a to wait for a fractured leg to heal. They will return in mid-July. Bill is studying the embryology of fresh caviar.
Dave Menard retired March 1 after 27 years as chief chemist for the Wheeling Stamping Co., Wheeling, W. Va. He and Tana don't have any special plans except to travel.
Merrill Whittemore, vice president of the First American National Bank, Duluth. retired Dec. 31 after 18 years with the bank. Before that he was vice president of a bank in Charlotte, N.C.
After 30 years with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, Conn., BradParker retired March 31.
Our class has had one governor—Lane Dwinell of New Hampshire—and one mayor, Elliott Donnelley of Lake Forest, 111. Now Bruce Lewis makes it two mayors—he was elected mayor of Palm Beach Shores, Fla., in March without any opposition. He retired January 1 as president of the Lewis Historical Co. We're obliged to Ernie Wright and Ham Hagar for sending clippings.
Does your wife watch soap operas? Tell her to watch for Ted Baehr (stage name Bob Allen) playing a retired judge on "Somerset." Ted Jr. '69 is in his third year at law school.
Taking with him 40 years of experience in commercial operations with Ohio Bell, Al Fowler has joined Mid-Continent Telephone Corp., Hudson, Ohio, to serve as commercial coordinator. Mid-Continent is the nation's fifth largest independent telephone system and serves 11 states. In his new position Al will develop work measurement standards on a system-wide basis and will be involved in planning uniform commercial procedures. His long service with Ohio Bell ended with the position of commercial supervisor for the greater Cleveland area. He and Janet have two sons, James, 20, and David, 17.
Chalk up a recruit for the east coast of Florida, just after we said our classmates seem to be settling on the opposite coast—Elliott Donnelley is now a neighbor of George Broughton and Charlie Hazzard in Delray Beach. Elliott says there are lots of Dartmouth men there of all ages. We didn't know Elliott had retired—he was vice chairman of R.K. Donnelley & Sons Co., the largest printing company in the country, with over 12,000 employees. If he still has it, we'd like to have a ride some day on his 14-gauge railroad back in Lake Forest, Ill., with one mile of track and three steam locomotives.
Jack Zellers of Southport, Conn., a vice president of People's Savings Bank, was installed as president of the Bridgeport Area Chamber of Commerce at its 96th annual meeting last month with 500 members and guests present.
A representative since 1928 of Bird & Son, Inc., roofing manufacturers, Bill Ford retired two months ago, and he and Jane have moved from Pittsburgh, Pa., to the Suwannee Hotel, St. Petersburg, Fla.
Nick Carter writes that he has been retired for over a year and "have found out I was born for it. Enjoy every month, week, and day." He was a vice president of the Irving Trust Co., New York. He and Clodagh are in Florida for some golf, then plan on going to Hanover for a look-see after many years.
Again it is our sad duty to inform you of the death of old friends: Rib Foster on Mar. 5, Dana Condon on Mar. 24 and Ted Granville-Smith on March 30. We extend our sympathy to their families, and to Don Giles on the death of his wife, Marie, on March 16.
