Edward Everett Horton was best known for his "Springtime for Henry" series. I'm least known for my "Springtime from Hugh" series. Be that as it may be, here's the latest—though some may be ancient:
Dick Kidder writes that he's been a laggard for the past few years, because he joined wife Marjory in her seven-year fight against cancer. She passed away last spring. He writes that "all bills are paid up and am remarried (??) and back in the main stream of life again." Dick, why the question marks?
Julian (Jabbo) Blass conveys the information that although birthdays are supposed to age us, he doesn't "feel any older probably because I own a liquor store and play tennis every day." If he's using his store inventory he probably doesn't feel anything. Jabbo also writes of a visit last fall to Louisville where he saw PrestonJoyes whose dinner hospitality he thoroughly enjoyed.
The big corporate news of the season concerns General Electric. First we find a release before us that effective last January 1 Bob Kelley was appointed manager of the Personnel Accounting Operation headquartered at 570 Lexington Ave. in New York City. Then we have clippings (three identical) from three classmates from the (March 2) august New York Times business section, with photos, that state that Walt Dance was one of two vice chairmen and executive officers appointed by G.E. Dave, in his newest capacity, will also become a member of the four-man corporate executive group. A much more detailed article on the entire upper echelon restructuring appeared in the March 4 issue of Business Week. From this, we garnered the info that Walt will oversee the consumer products, major appliances, components and materials groups—whatever they may be. All we know is that this group is responsible for about $3.5 billion in sales.
On the social level, we can report that Bob Weil's daughter, Rosalind announced her engagement ... and should be about two months married when you read this. Also, since mid-January, Jim McElroy has become the proud grandfather of a boy, via his daughter Michele.
A most newsy letter from Prez BobMacMillen (who's just returned from a vacation in California) brings news that on February 26 he watched the Dartmouth J.V. vs. St. Mary's (Conn.) High School, swimming meet and he doubts that any other class can boast a team roster with three classmates' sons thereon. Jim, son of Rollie Hillas, won the 400 freestyle; Bob, son of Jack Ingersoll, won the one-meter dive; and Brian, son of Jim Buck, was not reported upon, 'cause Bob missed his performance. I guess that in the next year or two, we'll be reading about all three of these fellows on the Varsity! Ye Prez also reports that the Ingersolls had been up a week or two previously for a visit, and although Jack's still teaching at the University School in Cleveland, he and Kay have bought a place in Florida for now ... and eventual retirement.
The annual Alumni Fund drive is now in its second month, and Art Ostrander's team of close to 70 ACA's will be contacting you (or should already have done so). Having preceded Art as Head Agent, I know the pains through which he's going to get you all to give, a little if you've been a non-giver in the past year or more, and more if you're a "regular." The College needs this annual giving for 12% of it's operating budget! The Class needs any gift from previous non-givers to pull us up in participation, an area where '40 is sorely lacking. How about it—dig into your check book and do something about it! Private colleges (if they're to remain that, as opposed to governmental institutions) mast have the backing of all alumni.
