The distance runners, particularly Tom Shiland, are the story of the spring track campaign.

Shiland, a junior from Cambridge, N.Y., who reminds you of Ichabod Crane, has come to the brink of clearcut recognition as the best distance runner in Dartmouth history. His 9:04.7 during a dual meet win over Colgate is the best outdoor two-mile time at the College and in winning that day he was a scant one-tenth of a second ahead of freshman teammate Chris Peisch. In the Heptagonal meet, where the three-mile replaces the twomile event, Shiland missed qualifying for the NCAA meet by four seconds as he placed third.

The Heps were the scene for another solid steeplechase performance by senior Eric Potter, who finished third, and a fine mile run by junior Larry Krol, who had his best time yet—4:11.2.

Despite these performances, it hasn't been the brightest season for Coach Ken Weinbel's team. "It's been too cold for the sprinters to really loosen up (although Dave Danielsen uncorked a wind-aided 9.7-second effort in the 100 during a dual meet at Brown)," said Weinbel. "The weather has hurt us and many other teams in the north."

The dual meet season stands 2-4 with a meet to go.
