Incredibly, another summer has come and gone, its memories a mixture of joy and sorrow as we remember happy reunions with family and friends but must accept the thinning of our ranks as reports, often delayed, reach us of our losses. We mourn the passing of Pennell Aborn on July 15, our indefatigable treasurer of whom no service to the Class was ever too much to ask.
We miss Rear Admiral Arthur Dearing, our tower of strength on the Pacific Coast, whose lifetime record in the U.S. Navy was a pride to all of us. Death came to him on May 8.
We share with Vogie Stiles the loss of his college roommate George L. McDonough whose death occurred on June 29 in Denver, Colo.
Only a day earlier came the death on June 28 of Dr. James B. Shields in the Glenn Falls (N.Y.) hospital.
Nor were these our only losses, for as of August 12 came word of the death of Harold G. Van Riper at age 81 at Carlisle Hospital in Carlisle, Pa. His distinguished career, both in service in World War I and in engineering, did credit not only to our Class but to the Thayer School from which he received his C.E. degree.
Jesse Stillman, in a recent letter to ElmerRobinson from Wilmington, Del., confesses nostalgia for New England but seeks solace and new skill in oil painting by copying color photographs of Mt. Chocorua.
With Jim Hawley at the wheel, Gordon andMargaret Piatt drove over from Rygate Springs, Vt., to visit us early this summer. It was a grand reunion that Martha and I thoroughly enjoyed.
With these all too inadequate notes and with so much undone and unsaid, your secretary since December of 1967 now signs off, confident that Henry Lowell who has agreed to carry on as secretary as well as newsletter editor will be given the same fine support you have given me.
To his new assignment approved by Vogie Stiles, Henry brings unlimited energy and enthusiasm; very real talent in newsgathering and writing: a warm interest in people; and a yen for travel that may bring him to you if you do not come to him.
Plans for our 60th Reunion in 1974 are going on steadily with Vogie pinch-hitting as reunion treasurer as well as master-minder. Remember all roads lead to Hanover.
