After consulting our favorite soothsayer we have been informed that the following men, whose birthdays fall in February, were born under the sign of Aquarias, the Water Carrier: Stillman, Phil. Smith, Dillingham, Overton, and DeWitt, whereas. Burleigh and Gilbert sprouted under the sign of Pisces, the Fishes. We congratulate all of them for the good auspices of their birth right which have already been realized and predict a satisfying continuation of the same.
Several years ago, when this reporter was attending the Alumni College in Hanover, we noted the unlady-like behavior of some of the girls who were attending summer school or forking in one of the workshops on campus. Perhaps it was only chauvinistic resentment at finding females in apparent possession of the lounge in Hopkins Center, but what really aroused our ire and caused us to write a letter to the Alumni Magazine was seeing their bare and dirty feet despoiling the new upholstery there.
Now, somewhat belatedly, Gov. (Raymond H.) Foss recalls our protest and states that he, too, visited the College at about that time and witnessed the same disgusting phenomenon.
Anyway, we were glad to get a response from Gov. even if it came a few years late and we hope that it may lead to some fascinating tale from him about his highly successful career.
From Franklin, Mass., we have a note from James C. Kehayas who, although he was with us for only one year, still maintains his loyalty for Dartmouth:
"When I left college I went back to Greece just after the Balkan wars. My parents and all the members of my family were there and besides, Macedonia, where I was born, belonged to Turkey when I left Europe, but now it had been liberated and become a part of Greece. No more Turkish oppression.
"I tried to establish myself in business in Salonica as organizer and representative of The Balkan Commercial Co. exporting to this country Greek food specialties and importing small consumer manufactured items. I was not successful, insufficient capitol and not enough experience, especially in dealing with the fluctuations of foreign exchange rates. The value of Greek money was eventually wiped out entirely as was that of so many other European currencies. So I came back to this country with my family since I had married during the time that I was over there.
"We are blessed with two daughters and four grandchildren two from each daughter.
"I am semi-retired and have turned the management of the family business over to one of our sons-in-law. Our other son-in-law has a doctors degree in his line and is a college instructor.
“My wife and I have spent some winters in Flrida, Clearwater, Miami Beach, Hollywood, but both of us now, on account of our age, find the comforts of home and the company of our grandchildren much more enjoyable and rewarding and have discontinued the Florida vacation.”
Al Humphries, like so many of the rest of us, finds that life is not all just a bowl of cherries. His wife is ill and in the hospital and recently they lost their only granddaughter, a senior in college, in a fatal automobile accident in North carolina From his home in Solon, Ohio, Al has sent us a reminiscence of a personal escapade which occurred in his freshman year in college and which will appear in a forthcoming issue of the 1914News Letter.
Al has also written a book entitled The FirstCommandment. It is an historical novel, the result of many years of research, and deals with the era 541 to 539 B.C. ending with the fall of Babylon in the latter year. He does not intend to publish his latest work but proposes to keep it as a family heirloom.
In former years we have had the pleasure of meeting Lize and Polly Wheelock at some of the Dartmouth functions here on the West Coast but this coming season they are planning to spend the first three months of the year in Fort Lauderdale on the East Coast. They plan also, to attend our big 60th in Hanover, come June, where Lize will conduct the memorial service for those of our classmates who have passed on.
