The summer winds have come and gone and once again we can look forward to another college year. That statement in itself is no longer even true 'cause in Hanover the college year runs a full 12 months, but for us "old timers" (notice how much nearer the front of the class notes section we get each fall) we'll continue to think of September to June as "the college year." It will only be eight months from now when 1 hope a tremendous outpouring of us appears on the Hanover Plain for our 35th Reunion (save June 10-12) about which you'll be hearing lots more between now and then. Kindly note these dates are different than those listed in the Indian Drum last June. As of this writing our Reunion will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 10, 11 and 12th, and plans are being made to precede this with a weekend nearby about which you will be hearing further at a later date.
Depending on the schedule of printing, addressing, and the slowness of the U.S. Postal Service this may arrive too late to remind those of you who can make it that our annual informal reunion and formal class executive committee meeting is set in Hanover for the weekend of October 12-14 with a major gathering of the clan chez Prez Bob MacMollen's post-game. If you can't (or didn't) make it but are available the 2nd-4th of November there'll be another get-together for the Yale game. For that one, rooms are not available, particularly close to Hanover, so plan accordingly. If you're planning on attending the Yale game get in touch with Bob as he will have a get-together at his home and, if there are enough of us, will make some dinner plans and reservations. Be sure to keep him posted.
The Alumni Fund is now ancient history, but Art Ostrander and his hard working band of assistants overcame our biggest problem, one of class participation. We slipped from winning the Green Derby to second place, but I know Art's pleased with the great number of givers - though one other class surpassed us. This year being a reunion year we'll have a different challenge, but again you'll be hearing more about that as the season progresses. I guess that's enough generalities for the time being, so here's with some news about various and sundry members of the Glass.
Checking my files that I put away last spring, I see that way back in May Charles Pinderhughes was elected to the Board of Trustees at Connecticut College. Charlie's a professor of psychiatry at B.U.'s School of Medicine, a lecturer at Harvard Med School, and also a director of psychiatric research at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Boston. Another springtime clipping concerns Major John F. McDonald Jr. of the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Mac's currently a medical supply officer at Boiling AFB in Washington, D.C. and was one of more than 600 reservists who met with active duty personnel at a reserve forces medical symposium held in conjunction with the annual AM A scientific meeting at which Senator Barry Goldwater was the keynote speaker.
If you missed reading the "Give A Rouse" column in the July issue of this magazine you may not know that Francis E. Whaland was named N.H. State Insurance Commissioner by Gov. Thomson. In the last class column I reported that he'd won his local selectman's seat, and his appointment to the state post was announced on June 13 and is a five year appointment. Subsequent to that announcement, Frank made the further statement, that he'd retain his locally elected position as during the campaign he'd often expressed the opinion that a selectman's job was not a full-time one. The final clipping left over from the month of May relates that the Net Hampshire Retail Merchants Association elected John D. O'Shea as its new president. The principal speaker at the meeting which elected Jack was - and this is truly a coincidence - Frank Whaland's predecessor. The same meeting electee 13 new directors to the NHRMA as well, one of whom is our own Earle Reingold!
A bunch of notes on hand from Jack Fitzgerald concerning various and sundry. One contains some typical North Country quotes from our last reunion guest Al Foley. Another item describes the beautiful wedding that Larry Herman gave his daughter in June. How's about a direct word from you, Larry? I always seem to get second hand info from Jack! Still more information from Jack concerns Fred PUlsbury who is representing assistant clerks of various Massachusetts state courts who are being threatened by a proposal that would prohibit them from practicing law while continuing working for various courts. Fred, what's been the outcome of this? The final "bon mot" from Jack merely relates that he periodically bumps into Paul Dyer (in Jack's words, "the diver") who's got an office in Boston's newest insurance building. My files on you, Paul, have nothing in them since 1956 so how's about it?
Back in May a regional dinner including classmates from Maine, N.H., and Vermont was held in Hanover and besides the usual Messrs. Graham, MacMillen, Ostrander, Rainie, and Wentworth included Ken Arew, Cliff Holmes, and Brad Roland. Subsequent to that Howie and BevZagor, who have a home in Norwich, spent the month of July there, most of the time being used repairing the road to their home which was washed out in the flooding caused by the heavy rains during the month of June.
During July the College held a Hanover Horizon's weekend which is a grueling 2lh day rum through of what's going on with the College including visiting with various professors and seeing all the new buildings. As guests of the College that weekend were Don and Liz McMahon, Sam and Lorraine Williams, and the aforementioned Zagors.
Attending the Alumni College during the month of August were Larry and Eunice Durgin.Bob Graham, Stet Whitcher, and Bob MacMillan's charming Crosbie. Also stopping by on the Hanover Plain during the summer were Walt Kelly, who had been climbing in the Franconia Notch area, and Al Gutman who has a farm in Tunbridge and was seen at the outing Club House for dinner.
That brings lis up to date and with your help I will be giving you more of this prattle in the same place next month.
